(Canastota, NY- Aug. 2013) There is quite a bit happening in September.  With school beginning in the first few days of the month, the library will lengthen our daily hours to accommodate students and others who need to use the library.

The Canastota Library will move to our Fall/Winter Hours Schedule beginning on Sept. 3.  Our hours will be:  M – F from 9am – 8:30pm; Saturday hours after Labor day are 10am to 4pm.  The library will be closed on Sept. 2 for Labor Day.

The Featured Art Exhibit in our Lawson Community Room for the month of September will be artwork from the Exceptional Artist.  Exceptional Artworks is an ongoing program that encourages people with developmental disabilities to express themselves through various art mediums. This program is a collaborative effort among voluntary and state operating agencies.

Participating agencies include CNY DDSO, ARC of Madison and Cortland Counties, ARC of Oneida-Lewis Counties, NYSARC, United Cerebral Palsy, Herkimer Area Resource Center, Resource Center for Independent Living and Heritage Farm.  The exhibit will be available for viewing during regular library hours

On Thursday, Sept 5 at 6:30 pm, John Taibi will debut his new book, “The Oneida Railway Company—from Horsecars to Interurbans.”  This event will be held on the second floor in the newly renovated Children’s Area.  Taibi’s book will be available for purchase. This is John Taibi’s 12th book and the first is CD-PDF format.

The book, and Taibi’s presentation will be completed in the same informative and personal fashion that readers have come to expect from Taibi’s work.  The book chronicles the life of the Oneida Railway Company from its earliest days to its most vibrant years as a modern interurban railway that provided timely, efficient, fast and safe conveyance of hundreds of thousands of people each year.  All those who attend the presentation will receive an authentic artifact as a free gift.  Light refreshments will be served.

Renovations to our second floor Children’s Area were completed during the summer months.  Thanks to the very generous donations of local residents, our Children’s Area is sporting a new look.  With a bit of color on our walls, book cases on wheels, window bench seating, a newly refurbished wooden floor and overall reorganization, we have a space that will meet the needs of the children and teens of our community for decades to come.  We are very grateful to our anonymous donors and we invite you to stop by and take a look at our Children’s Area the next time you visit the library.

Are you interested in crafting and trying something new?  On Tuesday, Sept 10 at 6:30pm, you can learn to make a string beaded necklace, earrings or bracelet.  This Jewelry Workshop is being presented by Shirley Thomas and Sandy Zeigler.  The cost is $10 per person and payment must be received at the library by Sept 5.  Due to space, the workshop is limited to ten participants.  All participants must be at least age 13.  All supplies will be furnished for this workshop for the fee.  Come and create!

Tuesday, Sept 24 at 1 pm, Book Chat will meet in the Canastota Library’s Nook on the first floor to discuss “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier.  The group welcomes new readers to their midst and encourages those attending to pick up the book at the library a month in advance of their discussions.

Skyping has become a great way to keep in touch with friends and family around the world.  The service allows users to communicate with others using a microphone and a webcam over the Internet. A Skype Workshop will be held at the Canastota Library on Monday, Sept 30 at 10am.  This hour and a half class will help you to learn the basics of skyping.  This program is free of charge and we suggest that you do bring your own laptop if you are able to do so as you will be installing skype on your own computer.

As always, the Canastota Public Library is here for all of your informational needs.  Feel free to contact us at 315-697-7030 or stop in and see us at 102 W. Center St in Canastota.
