Parodie Nets Gamewinner Over Host Vermont

(Burlington, Vt. – Aug. 26, 2013)  Sophomore Sidney Parodie scored her first collegiate goal in the 43rd minute Sunday afternoon, lifting Colgate to a 1-0 win over Vermont in the second regular season contest for women’s soccer.

With the victory, the Raiders won the TD Bank Classic and have moved to 2-0 on the season.

“Vermont made us earn every advantage,” Colgate’s head coach Kathy Brawn said. “I am pleased with how all of our players were completely prepared for this game.

“It was a terrific weekend and a great start to the 2013 season.”

COLGATE C-GATEColgate had its first quality scoring chance 12 minutes into the game. After earning a free kick 30 yards out, Jenna Raepple fired the ball on net but Vermont’s goalie Ally Ramos was there to make the diving save.

Vermont answered with an opportunity of its own when Paige Phillips found herself open with the ball in the 18-yard box. Chelsea Roche made a great defensive play by throwing her body in front of the shot, blocking a potential scoring chance for the Catamounts.

With four minutes to play in the half Vermont got its best chance as the Catamounts had two players alone in the box with the ball. Erin Cummings, who earned her first collegiate start in net for the Raiders, came out to interrupt the attack with a sliding save.

Less than two minutes later, Colgate earned its second scoring chance of the half. The ball was free at the top of the Vermont box and rookie Sarah Coy was able to tip the ball away from Ramos, who was coming out to make the save for Vermont. With the goalie out of the box, Coy tried her luck with a hard shot on net. The ball looked like it was going in, but Haley Marks came up with the defensive save, clearing it off the line and out for a corner.

The Raiders converted on the corner kick opportunity as they took a 1-0 lead when Parodie finished the ball to the lower right-hand corner. Caroline Brawner started the play with a great kick, finding Parodie on the opposite side of the goal.

Colgate almost extended its lead 10 minutes into the second half when Kelsey Hough and Catherine Williams teamed up inside the 18. Before Williams could get a good shot off Ramos challenged the ball, making the save and keeping it a 1-0 advantage.

Vermont nearly equalized with 15 minutes to play in the game, when the Catamounts worked a good wall pass in the Raiders 18. Nikki McFarland ended with the ball and shot low to the opposite side of the goal. The ball just missed the far post and sailed out for a goal kick.

Colgate pushed aside every Catamounts attack in the final minutes and secured the 1-0 victory.  The Raiders outshot Vermont, 16-7, and held them to three corners to Colgate’s 10.

The Raiders host Siena on Thursday for their home opener at 7 p.m. on Van Doren Field. The game will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports.
