(Canastota, NY – Aug. 2013) The Madison County Health Department and Madison County Office for the Aging, Inc. are sponsoring a free nutrition education program for Madison County residents with Type 2 diabetes and Pre-diabetes.

The six-session series, “Eating Well with Diabetes”, will be held at Office for the Aging, Inc. in Canastota on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm and will continue through Oct. 3.

Funding from the Hamilton-Bassett-Crouse Health Network allowed the county to bring the program back in 2012 after funding from the New York State Department of Health ended in 2010. This will be the fourth time the program has been offered in two years, and organizers hope to fill the class while the program is available.

Dina Lawson, Registered Dietician with Madison County Office for the Aging, will cover serving sizes, food label reading, menu planning, carbohydrate counting, and healthy cooking. Because the classes build on each other, it is best to attend all sessions if possible.

This is a free program for people with Type 2 diabetes and Pre-diabetes, so grab a family member or friend and join us for a fun learning experience. People who attended the spring program held in Hamilton liked the small class size for more individualized attention, as well as the interactive atmosphere and the support they received from the group. Participants also set goals for themselves, such as getting physical activity every day, drinking only water from lunchtime on, drinking less soda, and reducing their portion sizes.

Please call the Madison County Health Department at 366-2361 for more information or to sign up for the program. Space is limited to fifteen people.

The program brochure is available online at www.healthymadisoncounty.org in the calendar section or www.ofamadco.orgMadison County Office for the Aging.
