(West Point, NY – Oct. 9, 2013)  Despite outshooting West Point 16-13, Colgate saw the Black Knights score in the 46th minute to grab a 1-0 win over the men’s soccer team in a hard fought matchon Wednesday night.

Colgate (2-8-1, 1-1-1 PL) was led by Nick Rizzo, who tallied three shots in the contest. Five other Raider players registered two shots throughout the game. Freshman Ricky Brown made some phenomenal saves, notching six in total to match a career-high.

Army (8-1-1, 3-0 PL) received its unassisted goal by Sean Mogan off a set piece. WinstonBoldt played all 90 minutes in net for the Black Knights, earning five saves throughout the game.

Tanner Schilling opened the game firing a shot on goal just 16 seconds in. His shot sailed wide but gave the Raiders’ their first good chance on net.

At the 10-minute mark, Army’s Cody Guerry had a shot on goal from just outside the 18-yard box but Brown was there to make a great grab, stopping a potential goal.

Three minutes later, Brown made another incredible stop on Army’s Tanner Vosvick.

Colgate answered with an opportunity of its own on a free kick. Ethan Kutler curled the set piece from 20 yards out towards goal. His well-placed attempt skimmed the top corner of the goal, sailing out of bounds but giving the Raiders another great chance on net.

Just before halftime Schilling got taken down, awarding the Raiders a free kick. Barrett Metzger played the ball into the box, finding the head of Geinda Smith. The rookie’s flick on net was just saved by Boldt, however.

Less than two minutes into the second 45 minutes, Army tallied the eventual game-winner off a free kick just outside the right corner of the box. Mogan’s strike sailed into the upper left hand corner of the net, lifting the Black Knights’ 1-0 over the Raiders.

Brown stepped up big for the Raiders again when he made a brilliant save on a Guerrybreakaway. Colgate was able to clear away the rebound before any damage could be done.

The Raiders earned a corner kick with 31 minutes remaining in the game. Kutler sent the corner to the foot of Schilling just outside the top of the box. He saw an opening on goal and riffled a shot, but it sailed wide right of the goal.

Rookie Zach Pagani gave the Raiders a good chance on net when he beat the goalie deep in the box, after Boldt came out to make a save. Pagani shot back towards net but Army cleared it away before it could cross the goalline.

The Raiders stayed on the attack midway through the second half. Army collected the ball off a Colgate throw and kicked it out, fortunately finding the foot of Rizzo. The sophomore one-timed it on net, but Boldt made an impressive save, keeping his shutout alive.

Brown added to Colgate’s offensive pressure when he sent a free kick into the box. His driven ball was played perfectly to the head of Smith, who flicked it back towards goal. Dan Matthews’ tried side volleying it from five yards out but Boldt just got his fingers on it to push the ball out from a corner.

Army quickly countered with an opportunity of its own. Mogan played the ball over to Christian Clark, who headed it on frame. Brown’s reaction to the shot was incredible as he palmed it over the crossbar, saving a scoring chance.

The Raiders were still trying to break through in the final minutes of play when Brown played a free kick at center field. The cross into the box, was grabbed out of the air by Boldt, stopping any Raiders’ chance.

With 10 seconds remaining in the game, Metzger sent a throw in into the box. The ball was flicked on by Zach Tamen to Colin O’Neill but before the freshman could get a good shot off,Boldt came diving out to block any opportunity on net.

As the whistle blow at the end of regulation the Black Knights’ had secured a 1-0 victory over the Raiders.

Colgate held the slight advantage on corner kicks 7-6.
