LaVere, Powell named Mustang Athletes of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 11, 2013) The Morrisville State College athletic department has named Courtney LaVere (Oswego, N.Y.)and Josh Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.) its Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 6.

LaVere-MOR-2013-WVB LaVere, a freshman outside hitter, posted 23 kills, an assist, six service aces and 21 defensive kills in four matches for the Mustangs over the weekend.

Accounting for 29 points across the 1-3 weekend, LaVere posted a collegiate best eight defensive digs in the win over Wells, and followed with a 14 kill and four service ace performance against SUNY Cobleskill, also collegiate highs.

A graduate of Oswego High, LaVere is majoring in liberal arts and sciences –humanities and social science at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Nick LaVere of Oswego.

PowellJ13 Powell earns Mustang Athlete of the Week honors following his performance in Morrisville State’s 51-48 conference win over William Paterson on Saturday.

In the contest, he tallied 12 receptions for a career high 207 yards, and a touchdown, adding three kick returns for 76 yards to his stats on the day.

The junior wide receiver is ranked 13th overall in Division III in all-purpose yards (193.25/game), 21st in receiving touchdowns (5), 17th in receiving yards (489), ninth in receiving yards per game (122.3) and 24th in receptions per game (24). He also leads the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in each of those categories.

A graduate of Archbishop Stepanic High, Powell is majoring in gaming and casino management at Morrisville State. He is the son of Renee Powell and Jeffrey Ramsey of Yonkers.

Dunworth Named to D3football.com ‘Team of the Week’

DunworthT13(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 15, 2013) D3football.com has announced its National “Team of the Week” presented by Scoutware, for games during the week of October 11 – 12th, naming Morrisville State College junior punter, Tyler Dunworth (Poestenkill, N.Y.), to the special teams.

The honor came from an impressive punting performance against conference favorite Rowan in a 41-21 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) upset of the Profs.

In the game, Dunworth punted seven times for an average of 46.9 yards. Twice booting the ball 58-yards and three times pinning the Profs inside their own 20.

His best punt came in the fourth quarter when he pinned Rowan on their own two yard line helping the defense to pin back their ears for the 41-21 upset victory.

Dunworth is currently ranked third in the conference and 86th in the nation with a 36.7 average.

The graduate of Averill Park is majoring in residential construction at Morrisville State. He is the son of Diane and Jeff Dunworth.

Morrisville is on the road this weekend against conference opponent The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

Stewart Selected as D3football.com ‘Team of the Week’

StewartJ13(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 15, 2013)  D3football.com has announced its National “Team of the Week” presented by Scoutware, for games during the week of October 11 – 12th, naming Morrisville State College senior safety Jeremy Stewart (Moravia, N.Y.) to the defensive team.

The honor came from an impressive defensive performance against conference favorite Rowan in a 41-21 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) upset of the Profs.

In the game Stewart recorded nine tackles and an interception. The interception came late in the fourth quarter when the Profs trailed by one score. He returned the pick 24-yards to the Rowan 12-yard line, and set up the touchdown to seal the Mustangs victory.

His nine tackles on the day moves him to second all-time (188 tackles) on the Mustangs tackle list, only needing 30 more to surpass the record leader, current student assistant Enrique Robinson (217).

The graduate of Moravia High is majoring in human performance and health promotion at Morrisville State. He is the son of Sandra Wilkinson and Charles Stewart.

Morrisville is on the road this weekend against conference opponent The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

Johnson, Dunworth recognized as Corvias ECAC Football Players of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 16, 2013)  The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) has named its Corvias Football Players of the Week, selecting Morrisville State College junior quarterback Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.) as the Division III Southeast Offensive Player of the Week, and Tyler Dunworth (Poestenkill, N.Y.) the co-Special Teams Player of the Week for the week ending October 13.

JohnsonL13For a second time this season, Johnson has earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, leading Morrisville State to a 41-21 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over Rowan on Saturday. In the contest, he completed 17-of-31 passes for 251-yards and two touchdowns; adding 78 yards and three rushing scores in the ground game.

With the Mustangs trailing in the second quarter, Johnson scrambled for a 43-yard rushing score to tie the game, and later in the third quarter, finished off a 77-yard drive with a one-yard run for the go-ahead score.

The junior is a graduate of Ossining High and is majoring in liberal arts and sciences – humanities and social science at Morrisville State. He is the son of Esther Barrett of Ossining.

DunworthT13 Dunworth earns co-Special Teams Player of the Week recognition for his contribution to the Mustangs win over Rowan. He averaged 46.9 yards per punt on seven attempts, twice hitting longs of 58-yards.

He also downed three punts inside the Rowan 20-yard line, including one midway through the fourth quarter that pinned the Profs on their own two, helping to propel Morrisville State to its third straight victory, and second within the conference.

The junior is a graduate of Averill Park High and is majoring in residential construction at Morrisville State. He is the son of Diane and Jeff Dunworth of Poestenkill, New York.
