(Canastota, NY – Oct. 2013) Happy November.  It is another busy month at the Canastota Public Library.

The Great Swamp Conservancy’s Swamp Snappers will decorate the library walls with photographs as our featured Artists of the Month during November. An Artist Reception will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. Please come out and meet the members of the Swamp Snappers.  If you are a nature lover and photographer, why not consider joining this fun group of folks.  Photographic prints are available for purchase.

If you didn’t get a chance to visit the library to see the quilt display in October, the good news is that the Quilts are still on display during the month of November. Patrons Shirley Thomas and Sandy Zeigler have adorned some of the walls on the first and second floors with their lovely quilts.

All during the months of November and December, the Canastota Public Library will be accepting non-perishable food items in place of Canastota Library Fines.  We cannot accept the food for fines from other Mid-York Libraries.  We ask that the food donation be commensurate with the fine charged.  If several books are overdue, an acceptable donation might be a can of soup or vegetables.  If you have overdue DVDs (at $2 per day), a donation of rice or instant potatoes would be more appropriate.  All items donated will be given to the Opportunity Shop to help our less fortunate neighbors during the holidays.

The Teen Group at the Canastota Public Library is called Librateens.  They began meeting last month and will have a guest speaker on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m.  Teen Novelist Jeanne Arnold will be speaking to the teens about the writing process.  Her debut young adult novel, “Stubborn” will be released in January of 2014.  Her young adult paranormal romance, The Haunt of Thirteen Curves will be released in June of 2014.

Our Technology Workshops continue this month.  The popularity of our library eBooks prompts us to offer an eBook Workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.  Participants should bring their own devices and we will work with you to enable you to download library boons onto your eBook.  Patrons just love this new service.  Interested participants should register for this program as there is limited space.  Please call the library at 315.697.7030 to reserve your space or register at the Circulation Desk the next time you are at the library.

Bring your favorite doll to our Best Loved Doll Tea Party on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.  Our new library doll, American Girl Doll Caroline, will be here to meet everyone.  Caroline is a gift of patron, Sharon Costie.  She stars in her own series of American Girl books including, “Meet Caroline.”  At the party, we’ll enjoy punch, cookies and fun with our very favorite dolls from home.  Please contact the library as space is limited for this program.  The Best Loved Doll Tea Party is for Girls, up to age 12, their Favorite Doll and an adult companion.  Donations for this tea will be accepted and will be used to purchase additional doll accessories for Caroline.  Patrons in good standing will be able to borrow Caroline and her accessories for a one week period.  She comes with several outfits and travels in her own suitcase.

The library will be holding an Awards Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. to announce the winners of the 13th Annual Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest.  The contest, organized by Joan and Doug Eddy is a memorial to their daughter, Rebecca.  Ms. Eddy was a graduate of Canastota High School and John Hopkins University.  Prizes will be awarded in each age and writing category.  All first place winners will receive a case award of $25.  Second place winners will receive a $10 award.  Everyone who has entered the contest will have the opportunity to read from their entries at the Awards Ceremony.

Have you been thinking of starting a blog on the internet?  Or, perhaps you are interested in creating a website for your business?  Many small businesses and individuals now have their own website.  If you want to start a site and get something up and running fast, we can help.  Our Website Design Workshop teaches you to use WordPress to get your website or blog online.  This program will be offered on Tuesday, Nov. 19 beginning at 6 p.m.  If possible, participants should bring their own laptop computer.  The library has a few laptops that they can loan for the program as well.  Please call the library at 315.697.7030 to register or register at the Circulation Desk at the library the next time you visit.

Finally, the Library will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29.  We will reopen on Saturday, Nov. 30.  We wish all our patrons a Happy Thanksgiving Holiday.

For our regular weekly programming, please visit our webpage at www.canastotalibrary.org or call us at 315.697.7030.
