(Biddeford, ME – Jan. 4, 2014) The Morrisville State College men’s ice hockey team resumed play Saturday afternoon at the University of New England, and dropped the non-conference tilt 5-4 in overtime.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 3-8-1 overall.
John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) scored twice to lead the Morrisville State efforts, while teammate Ryan Marcuz (Richmond Hill, ON) added a goal and an assist. Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, ON) posted the other Mustang tally on the day.
Chris Azzano (Oshawa, ON) recorded the loss in net, turning away 29, including 12 in the third period.
Playing to a scoreless opening period, the Nor’Easters struck first just 25 ticks into the second period, before Doyle evened the contest for the Mustangs at 4:29.
New England regained the lead midway through the period, but the short lived lead would be equalized minutes later by Carvalho who converted the special team’s opportunity for the Mustangs at 14:46 to send it into the third knotted at two.
Doyle posted his second score of the afternoon to give Morrisville State the 3-2 advantage, but New England posted back to back scores within six minutes to take the 4-3 lead with 11 minutes showing on the clock.
Late in the period, Marcuz collected his seventh score of the season to tie the game at four, forcing the overtime period.
Early in the extra frame, a Morrisville State boarding penalty proved costly as New England maintained a presence inside the Mustang’s defensive zone and found a way to sneak one past Azzano at the 1:51 mark for the non-conference win.
Morrisville State held the slim 37-34 advantage in shots, and converted 1-of-6 power play opportunities to the Nor’Easters 2-of-7.
The Mustangs return to the ice Saturday, Jan. 11 at Nichols College.
