Downtown enhancements planned for sidewalks, curbing, street lighting
(Canastota, NY – Jan. 22, 2014) Village of Canastota Mayor Carla DeShaw recently announced that the village has been awarded a grant from the state Department of Transportation for the enhancement of downtown. The grant will allow the village to complete $630,000 in improvements between Center and Canal streets on Peterboro Street.
The enhancements will include new sidewalks, curbing and historic street lighting. A professional assessment of the trees in the downtown area and possible pruning and/or replacement of the trees is included in the grant.
The improvements are port of a two-phase project.
The second phase of the project is currently in the initial planning stage, but is expected to include similar improvements to Peterboro Street between Chapel and Canal Street.
The Canastota project is part of $67 million in funding for bicycle, pedestrian and multi-use path enhancements sponsored by the state of New York.
“We are ecstatic that the governor continues to recognize our efforts to improve our village both esthetically and economically,” DeShaw said. “In addition to this grant, the village has received funding for the Upstate NY Food Hub to process and package locally grown products year-round for distribution; Ariston Dairy Products, Inc., a new start-up Greek yogurt plant that intends to produce Greek yogurt and feta cheese; Queensboro Farms to expand product lines and capacity; The International Boxing Hall of fame to expand their facilities; and New York State Green Grant to reduce energy and improve the environment at the villages waste water treatment plant. These projects are bringing in excess of $6 million to our village an over a hundred local jobs.”
