Zagger

(Oneida, NY – Jan. 2014) Mark Zagger, also known as “Best coyote trapper this side of the Mississippi!” will be a featured guest and speaker at the CNY Sportsman show in Oneida on Feb. 8.

Zagger first experienced trapping as a young boy in 1976.  As a wildlife biology student in college, he continued his fascination with fox and coyotes by taking care of and studying several mated pairs of coyotes, red fox, and grey fox at the university bio-station.

From the very beginning, he took coyotes in numbers basically unheard of throughout the northeast, where coyotes were just taking a strong foothold.  That success, coupled with increasing annual harvest numbers, has placed Mark in an elite fraternity of trappers nationally.  Zagger has averaged 125 coyotes a year for the last seven years (183 coyotes being the highest number), and over 2,200 coyotes lifetime, the bulk coming during his limited three-week trapping vacation.

Zagger is known for giving trapping demonstrations and talks around the country at trapping conventions and state events.   He has authored several magazine articles and has contributed to several books related to the art of coyote trapping.  He is currently a pro-staffer for the hunting and trapping website www.scoutlookweather.com.

Authors, outdoor writers, and wildlife artists will also be featured at the 2014 CNY Sportsman Show. Other attractions are booth displays, free seminars, mount displays, and the return of the renowned Salerno brothers of the Adirondacks. The show for outdoor enthusiasts will be held at the Kallet Civic Center on Main St. Oneida from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  1. This photo above is a perfect illustration of the inability of some people to enjoy nature and the outdoors without seeking ego gratification, regardless of the suffering it causes another living being.
I don’t see a great outdoors man in this picture.
A great outdoorsman leaves nature as he finds it, or only takes what he needs from it.
Coyotes perform important roles in nature with a single coyote eating upwards of 1800 rodents a year, providing those of us lucky enough to live next to them a free pest control service.
They are also intelligent, loyal, family oriented, resilient, athletic, fascinating animals and they deserve more respect than to be strung up as trophies to satisfy fragile egos.

  2. Keli,

Much of what you state is true. However, I speak as a resident of NYS, and coyotes in NY are technically an invasive species. European settlers didn’t know what a coyote was until after the Lewis And Clark Expedition.
So using your purest reasoning, coyotes in NY should be eradicated, since they are not indigenous to NY. So we could, leave nature as our forefathers found it.

Also they kill more than mice, my area used to be teaming with Varying Hares and Ruffed grouse. Coyotes along with other predators such as, Fisher and raptors have helped lower these small game species populations. There are many coyotes in my area, I shot 2 from my porch in the last couple of weeks, but I still have to place D – Con in my garage and storage barns to control my local mouse population. So much for your ,” free pest control service”.

The picture does not portray trophies, rather raw fur for the global market which currently is very strong. Real fur is much more “green” than faux fur that is made from petroleum.
