(Madison County, NY – Jan. 2014) On Jan. 10, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County hosted the 2013 4H Awards & Recognition Banquet. This year’s banquet had 100 people in attendance and started off with a homemade ziti dinner.
The banquet is organized every year to recognize the achievements of Madison County 4Her’s. Those who attend are awarded for community service, 4-H projects, leadership, and how they bring 4-H into their everyday lives.
First, clubs are recognized for club projects and community service. This year, Natures Workers 4-H Club won both the Creative Club Project Award and the Outstanding Club Community Service Award. Honorable mentions were given to Lincklaen Shamrocks for Creative Club Project and Spurs & Spokes for Outstanding Club Community Service.
Jessica Omans, the club leader of Natures Workers, went home with the 2013 We Love Our Leaders Award as well.
Other awards included the 4-H Spirit Award. Recipients included: Ethan Baker, Will Groetz, Hanna Keppler, Tommy McIntosh, Tatiana Nowakowski, Erich Omans Jr., Sean Smithers and Elizabeth Zachow. As well as the Project Encouragement Award, with recipients Sean Smithers in Sewing, Will Groetz in Creative Arts, Ethan Baker in Woodworking, Erich Omans Jr. in Fish/Aquatics, Matthew Eisenhut and Elizabeth Zachow in Diary, and Juliana Rudd and Hayley Patane in Horse.
For Junior awards, Shelby Curtis won the 4 Leaf Clover Award. Project Achievement Award recipients were Terry Omans in Public Presentations, Alyssa Russel in Horse, Alison Eisenhut, Sarah Loucks and Jonathan Reale in Dairy. The Junior Achievement Award recipient was Noah Skeele. Jennie McIntosh won the 4H Explorer award.
The M.G. Adams award is given in memory of Mr. Adams, the “Dean” of livestock in New York State. The recipients for the M.G. Adams award were Katelyn Bloss and Hope Doney.
Junior Leader was awarded to Morgan Cotter, Shelby Curtis, Sasha Demenezes, Maria Groetz, Ashley Kent and Mya Walters.
Each year one deserving 4-H’er is awarded the Laura Janson Sportsmanship Award. This award is a traveling trophy that is given in memory of Laura Janson. It is awarded to a 4Her who shows the same qualities as Laura did, not only in 4-H but in everyday activities. They need to be a friend, a leader, and an encourager, happy and honest, always extend a helping hand, always has a smile, works extremely hard in everything and always gives 100 percent. This year the Laura Janson Sportsmanship Award recipient was Haley Demenezes.
Senior Achievements were awarded to, Sasha Demenezes in Horse Projects, Ashley Kent in Sewing Projects, Emerson Brothers in Creative Arts, Autumn Skeele in Community Service Projects, Aubrey Skeele in Public Presentations Projects, Janeen Reale in Diary Projects, Morgan Cotter in Horse Communications Projects, Mya Walters in Woodworking Projects, and Maria Groetz in Cooking & Baking Projects.
Also in Senior Awards was Matthew Reale with the Millard Thayer Award, Alanna Parker with the Deacon Doubleday Memorial Award, Erica Reale with the Danforth Leadership Award and Marissa Davies receiving the Senior 4 Leaf Clover Award.
4H Trip Scholarships are also awarded to Juniors and Seniors. This included Capital Days, a trip to the State Capital to learn about history and government. This was awarded to Matthew Reale and Autumn Skeele. The Career Explorations Trip is a three day program at Cornell University to learn about campus life, department programs and meet other 4-H’ers from across the state. The Career Explorations Trip was awarded to Aubrey Skeele and Maria Groetz.
The last awards are for the Honors 4-H Education Trip Scholarships. 4Her’s are rewarded a $40 scholarship to aid them in attending an educational trip of their choice, including; Teen Winter Weekend, Dairy Discovery, STARR, Animal Crackers, Standardbred Camp, Cornell Career Explorations or more. The Scholarships were awarded to Katelyn Bloss, Emerson Brothers, Shelby Curtis, Marissa Davies, Haley Demenezes, Hope Doney, Alison Eisenhut, Ashley Kent, Jennie McIntosh, Terry Omans, Erica Reale, Janeen Reale, Jonathan Reale, Alyssa Russell, and Noah Skeele.
