Morrisville State hockey blanked by Fredonia

(Fredonia, NY – Jan. 31, 2014) Host Fredonia State shut out visiting Morrisville State College men’s ice hockey, as they posted a 2-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over the visitors Friday night in Fredonia.
Tonight’s loss is the first time the Mustangs have been held scoreless on the year, and dropped them to 5-12-2 overall, 2-8-1 in conference action. Fredonia improves to 6-9-4 overall with the win.
Jakob Rasmussen (Vallentuna, SE) recorded the loss for Morrisville State in net, making 27 stops on 29 Blue Devil attempts.
Fredonia scored once in the second and added a security score in the third, while keeping the Mustangs from finding the back of the net.
The Blue Devils held the narrow 29-25 advantage in shots on the night, converting 1-of-4 power play chances.
Their first score came at 2:07 in the second, before adding the power play tally midway through the third.
Four goal burst leads Fredonia past Morrisville State hockey
(Fredonia, NY – Feb. 1, 2014) Visiting Morrisville State College men’s hockey led 2-1 after two periods, but a four goal burst in the final frame gave host Fredonia State the 5-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win Saturday night in Fredonia.
Fredonia sweeps the weekend over the Mustangs, dropping them to 5-13-2 overall on the season, 2-9-1 in SUNYAC play.
Dan Morello (Vaughan, ON) and John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) each posted tallies for Morrisville State, Morello’s on a power play at 7:09 in the first, and Doyle’s at 41 seconds into the second on the man advantage.
Jakob Rasmussen (Vallentuna, SE) had 41 saves in the losing effort for the Mustangs.
Morrisville State and Fredonia entered the third period knotted at two, before the Blue Devils posted the go ahead tally just 10 seconds in and added another six minutes later for the two goal lead.
Back-to-back tallies midway through the final frame put the game out of reach, as Fredonia posted a power play score at 10:23 and added another just 11 seconds later to secure the win.
Morrisville State returns to the ice Friday, hosting nationally ranked Oswego. Puck drops at 7 p.m.
Anderson nets 20 in 72-62 loss to Cazenovia College
(Morrisville, NY – Feb. 1, 2014) Freshman point guard Jordan Anderson (West Edmeston, N.Y.) led all scorers with 20 points, but visiting Cazenovia College collected the 72-62 win over Morrisville StateSaturday afternoon in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action in Morrisville.
With the loss, the women drop to 4-13 overall, 2-8 in NEAC play, while Cazenovia improves to 3-15 overall, 3-7 in conference action.
Anderson posted 11 of her points on 15 attempts from the free throw, while collecting six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Caitlynn Adams (Sherburne, N.Y.) added 10 points in the losing effort for Morrisville State, recording the double-double with 11 rebounds. Jennel Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also snagged 11 boards to go along with her seven points and three assists, while teammate Monique Jadotte (Bronx, N.Y.) posted a game high six steals.
Megan Plahanski led Cazenovia with 17 points, draining five from long range, while teammate Erin O’Malley added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kimberly Vrigian had 11 points for the Wildcats off the bench while Mary Salo controlled the boards for Cazenovia with 11.
Cazenovia raced out to an early 10 point lead in the opening minutes, and led by as many as 14 in the first half, before Morrisville State capitalized off Wildcat miscues to get back in the game, and trail by just 33-25 at the break.
Back-to-back layups by Adams in the opening minute of the second brought the Mustangs to within four, but Cazenovia went on a 21-1 run over the next five minutes for a commanding 23 point advantage with just over 14 minutes to go.
The visitors led by 17 with nearly four minutes showing on the clock, but a late 12-2 surge made it a seven point margin with 47 ticks to go.
Cazenovia secured the win with a layup and two free throws down the stretch.
Morrisville State returns to the court Tuesday, hosting SUNY Canton at 5 p.m.
Morrisville State tops rival Cazenovia in high scoring affair, 94-88
(Morrisville, NY – Feb. 1, 2014) The Morrisville State College men’s basketball team withstood a late Wildcat comeback, and topped Route 20 rival Cazenovia College 94-88 Saturday afternoon in Morrisville in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action.
The win lifts the Mustangs to 11-6 overall, improving their mark to 8-3 overall in the conference, while Cazenovia drops to 5-12, 3-8 in NEAC play.
Morrisville State’s senior class dominated the action on the court, with five posting double figures in scoring and two recording double-doubles. Brandon Hanks (Syracuse, N.Y.) led all scorers with 26 points as he went 7-for-10 from the floor, draining three from long range, while adding five rebounds and assisting another three. Teammate Kucjok Ater (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted a double-double behind a 17 point, 10 rebound performance, blocking two.
Jordan Prior (Cortland, N.Y.) added 15, converting 9-of-11 from the free throw line, while snagging six boards and assisting a game high five. Center Tom Wilk (Cortland, N.Y.) added 13 points and a team high 11 rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive glass, as he registered his second double-double of the season, adding three assists to his tallies, while teammate Jailaan Kinsey (Syracuse, N.Y.) rounded out the leaderboard with 10 points for the Mustangs, also posting three assists.
Hanks’ three 3-field goals and three assists put him atop the Mustang record books in all-time three-pointers made (127) and all-time assists (403) recorded in a career at Morrisville State. He now holds three records for the Mustangs, all being set this season.
Five tallied double figures for the visitors, led by Nate Hudson with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Malik Adair-Mountain added to the Wildcats hot shooting from downtown, posting 18 points for Cazenovia, nine total from long range, while Daniel Cunningham added 14.
Keith Caiello had 13 on the day, while DeMarcus Bernard came off the bench to round out the scoring leaders for Cazenovia with 11. Ryan Gavin led the Wildcats with 11 rebounds, two coming on the offensive glass.
Cazenovia was quick to make a statement, as Gavin drained the Wildcat’s first three of the day on their first possession, and increased the early lead to four with another from Hudson nearly three minutes in.
Morrisville State then picked up the pace and went on a 12-2 run over a two minute spurt behind two tre’s from Hanks to take the 16-10 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
The Mustangs held the slim single digit lead until a three from Bernard made it a one-point margin with 9:50 to go in the opening half.
Three straight buckets by Wilk in the post sparked a 10-2 Mustang run, capped off by a throw down by Prior after collecting the offensive board, for a nine point advantage for the hosts.
A layup by Wilk with 2:29 to go in the half gave Morrisville State the 10 point lead, but a three from Caiello cut it to seven as the visitors hit two free throws down the stretch to make it a five point game at the break.
In the second, Hudson drained one for Cazenovia to make it a 41-41 game with 17:51 to go, but the Mustangs offense got rolling and posted a 15-3 run over the next three minutes to break the game open to a 12 point margin.
The Wildcats reversed the tables and put together their own 13-3 spurt to make it a one point game, and hung within single digits of the Mustangs, but couldn’t overcome the hosts as Morrisville State posted the 93-88 conference win.
The Mustangs shot 50 percent from the floor in the game, including 64.3 percent in the second half, but struggled on the free throw line, only managing to convert 24-of-42 attempts.
Morrisville State dominated play in the paint, outscoring the Wildcats 50-24, but it was Cazenovia who was the threat from long range, nailing 13-of-27 from beyond the arc The Mustangs held the 46-36 advantage on the glass, and forced 12 Cazenovia turnovers.
The Mustangs take a break from conference play and host SUNY Canton on Tuesday, before taking on current conference leader, Lancaster Bible, on Friday.
