By Matt Faulkner

(Hamilton, NY – March 5, 2014) On snowy afternoon on campus, The Raiders hung in with Cornell until a late first-half run allowed the Big Red to pull away to defeat the Raiders 15-7.

Colgate (1-4) saw Megan Ark score at least three goals for the third-straight game, while Kallan Murray tallied two goals. Taylor Fischer and Alison Flood each had goals as well. Ark also added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sarah Bowles did an excellent job on draw controls, pulling down five of Colgate’s eight earned.

Jennie Berglin made six saves in her fifth start of the season. Four of the stops came in the first half. She also grabbed three ground balls.

Cornell (2-1) had two big scorers on the day with Lindsay Toppe tallying eight points on four goals and four assists. Emily Tripodi wasn’t far behind with three goals and four assists for seven points. Sarah Hefner was a force on draws for the Big Red with seven draw controls to go with a score.

Renee Poullot stymied the Raiders on 10 shots with five saves in each half to earn her second win.

The game started in a hard snow squall and Cornell was able to score the first two goals of the game in the opening seven minutes. Tripodi scored and added an assist on the first two goals. Ark answered for the Raiders with her 16th of the season on a nice move from outside the fan. Ark’s goal started a run of four goals in a minute for both teams and Cornell had a 4-2 advantage with 19:03left. Murray cut the lead to 3-2 during the quick run of goals with an assist to Ark.

The Big Red took control from there with five of the next six goals to take an 8-3 lead at the half. Amie Dickson had two of the scores for Cornell, while Toppe assisted on three of tallies. Colgate’s lone goal came from Fischer. She made a move like Ark’s in the opening minutes as Fischer duked a defender at the top of the fan and tucked one past Poullot.

Cornell had a slim 15-12 shot advantage after 30 minutes and owned an 8-4 lead in draws.

The teams traded goals coming out of halftime. Colgate scored, but couldn’t solve Toppe or Tripodi to cut into the lead. Ark had two goals in the second half, while Flood and Murray added tallies as well. Cornell just had an answer for every Colgate chance at coming back. The Big Red finished the game off with three-straight goals to earn the 15-7 win.

Colgate was able to get its shots as the Raiders led 28-26 in that category, but couldn’t find the net. Colgate had a 20-17 advantage in ground balls and caused 10 turnovers.

The Raiders jump into league play this weekend with a visit to Holy Cross on Saturday. The game will be featured live on the Patriot League Network.
