(Morrisville, NY – March 11, 2014) Visiting Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter Tuesdayafternoon, en route to a 13-7 non-conference victory over host Morrisville State College in Morrisville.
The loss is the first for the Mustangs on the season, dropping them to 3-1 overall. Plattsburgh improves to 4-1 with the win.
Brendan Damm led the Cardinals with five goals and two assists, three scores alone in the third quarter, while Robbie Ashlaw tallied two scores and one assist to lead Plattsburgh.
Andrew Hauk recorded the win, making 13 stops in 55 minutes of action before being relieved by Erik Howard for the final five minutes. Howard registered one save, allowing two goals.
Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Mustangs in the losing effort, with teammate Eliud Evans (Culver City, Calif.) contributing two scores.
Tom Rosaschi (East Syracuse, N.Y.) added a score and assisted two others, while teammates Jeremy Beresovoy (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Brendan Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) rounded out goal scorers with one each for Morrisville State.
Mustang keeper Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded 22 saves in the contest, including a combined 13 in the second half.
Ashlaw was first to strike for the visitors, posting an unassisted tally at the 9:09 mark before Evans responded for the hosts off a feed from Geswaldo. The Cardinals posted back-to-back tallies in under a minute’s time to take a 3-1 lead, but Geswaldo made it a one goal game, burying the shot off the pass from Joseph Chazen (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
In the second quarter, Evans and Geswaldo matched Plattsburgh’s scores, making it a 5-4 game in favor of the Cardinals at the half.
In the third, Morrisville State had no answer for the Cardinal offensive blitz as they tallied four straight scores, two unassisted goals off a roll by Damm, for the 9-4 advantage.
Shannon was able to sneak one by Hauk to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard in the third, but Damm quickly answered with his fifth score of the day with just 11 ticks to go in the quarter, for the five goal lead.
Plattsburgh scored three straight in the fourth quarter, before Morrisville State’s Rosaschi posted a goal with 2:04 to go, and Beresovoy added another just over a minute later, but the Mustangs ran out of time as Plattsburgh collected the non-conference win.
The Cardinals held the 48-34 advantage in shots on the day, and won the ground ball battle 41-35. Plattsburgh was successful on 3-of-5 extra man opportunities, compared to 2-of-7 for Morrisville State.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to Alfred University.
