RIT Student-Athletes Earn All-Academic Team Honors

Liberty League commissioner Tracy King recently announced the 483 fall sport student-athletes who have qualified for the league’s All-Academic Teams in their respective sports – including a total of 34 student-athletes from Rochester Institute of Technology. Among them was Luke Dorsey, a sophomore on the men’s soccer team. Dorsey of Cazenovia is in RIT’s economics/industrial engineering program.

To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20.

SUNY Oswego Students on President’s List

Several area residents have been named to the president’s list for the fall 2013 semester at SUNY Oswego. Students who achieve grade averages of 3.80 and above on the 4.00 scale are named to the president’s list, the top 7.7 of Oswego students.

SU Potsdam Awards Degrees to Area December Graduates

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently awarded baccalaureate and master’s degrees to 158 students. The SU Potsdam graduates were awarded their degrees in December 2013. The graduates included:

SU Potsdam Names Area Students to Dean’s List

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 412 students who excelled academically in the Fall 2013 semester to the Dean’s List. The SU Potsdam students included:

Britta Barry of Chittenango, whose major is art studio; Samuel Caton of Earlville, whose major is mathematics; Amanda Cossette of Waterville, whose major is music education; Caleigh Tuttle of Hamilton, whose major is theatre; and Carolynn Werthman of Munnsville, whose major is psychology.

To achieve the honor of being on the dean’s list, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of between 3.25 and 3.49 in the given semester.

MVCC Students Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa

Mohawk Valley Community College inducted several new members into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. The Lambda Beta is MVCC’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

This year’s event marks the 53th Anniversary for the Lambda Beta Chapter at MVCC, which was started in 1960 with the induction of 24 students when the College was known as the Mohawk Valley Technical Institute.

The 2013 fall inductees are:

Samantha Savage of Canastota majoring in food service administration-restaurant management and Clifford Talbot of Oriskany Falls, majoring in accounting.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society which serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year College students while providing opportunities for individual growth and development through academic, leadership, and service programming. It is the largest honor society in American higher education, having been established in 1918 by two Missouri two-year college presidents.

Adams Inducted into National Residence Hall Honorary Chapter

Laura Adams of Kirkville was one of 12 students inducted into SUNY Oneonta’s Edward K. Griesmer chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary, a branch of the National Association of Colleges and University Residence Halls, in November.

Made up of the top 1 percent of student leaders on campus, NRHH recognizes students who have made outstanding contributions to the residence hall community. Students must be nominated by a Residence Life staff member, go through an application and interview, and then be selected for induction through a blind process.

Adams is a junior majoring in environmental science at SU Oneonta.

Bonavita of Cazenovia is Student Innovator

In a “new and different way of learning,” Matthew Bonavita of Cazenovia recently was part of a student-faculty team that worked together on a project entitled “From the Iroquois to the Lax Bros: The History and Evolution of the Game of Lacrosse.”

Matt, a member of the class of at Pomfret School in Connecticut, was recently part of an all-school academic experiment called Project: Pomfret. From Dec. 3 through 18 the students and faculty at Pomfret were at school, but not, in the conventional sense, in school. In place of class time and homework, they were instead out tackling one of 29 innovative projects – among them designing and building a real footbridge, conducting statistical and laboratory analyses on the economic and nutritional value of organic produce, and trying to make sense of the Middle East, the environment, hip-hop music, the practicality of dams; and actually producing and using biodiesel fuel.

Matt was in the group of students and faculty who collaborated on “From the Iroquois to the Lax Bros: The History and Evolution of the Game of Lacrosse.”

Gianforte Earns Fall 2013 Dean’s List Honors

Piper Gianforte of Cazenovia has been named to the fall 2013 dean’s list at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. Gianforte is a media communication major. Full-time students who complete 12 or more credits per semester and earn a GPA of 3.4 or higher are placed on the dean’s list that semester.

Reid Named Kutztown University Dean’s List

Morgan Pauline Reid of Sherburne has been named to the fall 2013 dean’s list at Kutztown University. To be eligible for dean’s list, an undergraduate student must be registered for at least 12 credits and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60. More than 1,600 students were named to the list for their academic achievement.

Betts Named to Castleton’s Dean’s List

Justin Betts of Hamilton, has earned a spot on the Castleton College dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester. To qualify for this academic honor, the student must maintain full-time status and a semester grade point average of 3.5.

Hofstra Recognizes Students

More than 2,000 high-achieving students have been named to the Hofstra University dean’s list for fall 2013. Students who began their studies before fall 2012 must earn at least a 3.4 grade point average to qualify. Those who entered the university after fall 2012 must earn a grade point average of 3.5. Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Herman A. Berliner congratulated these students on their impressive academic achievement.

The following local residents were named to the fall 2013 dean’s list at Saint Michael’s College, a liberal arts and sciences, residential Catholic college located in Burlington, Vermont, one of the top 10 college towns in America:

Residents Among December Grads at SUNY Oneonta

The following local residents are among the 327 students who graduated from SUNY Oneonta following the fall 2013 semester. Graduates were honored at a December recognition ceremony hosted by College President Nancy Kleniewski and held in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. They also are eligible to participate in the college’s commencement on May 17.

Erin O’Hern of Canastota earned a BS in computer art and Hannah Weinell of Sherburne earned a BA in music.

Students Study Abroad Through St. Lawrence University

The following students are participating in St. Lawrence University’s Study Abroad Program for the spring 2014 semester.

Danielle M. Capirci of Hamilton is a member of the class of 2015 and is majoring in English. Capirci, who graduated from Hamilton Central School, is studying in London.

Sarah C. Glass, of Cazenovia, is a member of the class of 2015 and is majoring in performance and communications arts. Glass, who graduated from Cazenovia High School, is studying in Austria.

Beaver Attends SUNY Delhi Trip to South Africa

Cassandra Beaver of Sherburne was one of 17 SUNY Delhi veterinary science technology students who spent 23-days in South Africa to learn about wildlife conservation and the crucial role veterinary medical staff play in the country’s growing wildlife industry. The trip was the result of on-going partnership with EcoLife Expeditions and the University of Pretoria.

Beaver is pursuing an associate’s degree in veterinary science technology at SUNY Delhi.

Students visited a number of unique facilities that related to endangered species breeding, wildlife rehabilitation and reptile conservation. At the Balule Nature Preserve, they honed their bush skills by tracking wildlife and learning how to immobilize animals in the wild to provide medical care.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Students Named to Dean’s List

About 3,250 students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester.

The dean’s list recognizes full-time students who maintain grade-point averages of a minimum of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 and have no grades below “C.”

Rose Named Member of SU Delhi’s Architecture Club

Alexandra Rose of Oneida, has been named a member of SU Delhi’s Architecture Club for the 2013-14 academic year. Rose is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architectural design and building.

The Architecture Club is one of more than 50 recognized student organizations found on the SU Delhi campus. The college continues to seek opportunities in providing students with academic support outside of the classroom. The Architecture Club is a student-run organization with a purpose to promote fellowship among its members through architecture-related activities.

Caton earns SUNYAC Fall All-Academic Team Accolade

Sam Caton of Earlville was one of 44 SUNY Potsdam student-athletes to earn a spot on the State University of New York Athletics Conference All-Academic Team for the fall semester, the conference announced recently.

Caton is a freshmen member of the SUNY Potsdam men’s soccer team. Players named to the All-Academic Team have a minimum 3.3 G.P.A. for the fall 2013 semester.

Kozik Named Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges

Dawn Kozik of Canastota, majoring in human services at Herkimer College, was one of 23 students that were named Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. This is the 48th year Who’s Who has bestowed this honor upon outstanding senior leaders for their scholastic and community accomplishments.

Congratulatory remarks were delivered by Dean of Academic Affairs Michael Oriolo and Dean of Students Dr. Matthew Hawes. Dean Oriolo said “the students distinguished themselves in two areas–leadership and scholarship.” Dr. Hawes told students “you define what you will do. Hard work does pay off.”

Hannah C. Chanatry of Cazenovia has been selected for inclusion on the dean’s list for academic achievement during the fall 2013 semester at St. Lawrence University. Chanatry is majoring in English and performance and communications arts. She is a member of the class of 2015. Chanatry graduated from Cazenovia High School.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have completed at least four semester units and have an academic average of 3.6 based on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

Siena College Releases Fall 2013 Honors Lists

Luke Greiner, a computer science major from Chittenango, was named to the president’s list; Alyssa Endres, a physics major from Chittenango, was named to the president’s list; Maria Rocco, a business major from Oneida, was named to the president’s list; and Nicole Tubbs, a business major from Madison, was named to the dean’s list.

High School Students Earn Scholarships at Paul Smith’s

One hundred high school students earned scholarships to Paul Smith’s College after competing in the Presidential Scholarship Competition Saturday, Feb. 22. Recipients include:

Adam Alishauskas of Sherburne. Alishauskas received a full tuition scholarship.

Alex Boss of Madison. Boss received a $1,000 scholarship.

Dakota Bridge of Madison. Bridge received a $1,000 scholarship.

Contestants participated in a pair of group problem-solving challenges as part of the competition. One was centered around an exercise to build a tower using balloons and few other materials; the other involved writing and acting a play using a handful of provided elements. The students also participated in a one-on-one interview with a college representative.

Scholarship awards ranged between $1,000 and full tuition. Recipients who choose to attend Paul Smith’s are eligible to receive the scholarships annually for as long as they are enrolled.

Ryan of Cazenovia Selected for Mathematics Honorary Society

Liam B. Ryan of Cazenovia has been selected for membership in the St. Lawrence University chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary society. Ryan is majoring in economics-mathematics combination. He is a member of the class of 2015. Ryan graduated from Cazenovia High School.

Membership eligibility for Pi Mu Epsilon varies by class year, but all students must have taken a qualifying number of mathematics courses and have achieved minimum grade-point averages in those courses, as well as overall, depending upon one’s seniority.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society which serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students while providing opportunities for individual growth and development through academic, leadership, and service programming. It is the largest honor society in American higher education, having been established in 1918 by two Missouri two-year college presidents.

Aspinall Earns Dean’s List Recognition at Merrimack

University of Rhode Island Honors Dean’s List Students

The University of Rhode Island is pleased to announce that about 4,300 undergraduates have qualified for the fall 2013 dean’s list. The students represent nearly all of Rhode Island’s cities and towns, all six New England states, New York, New Jersey and many other states and nations.

Among them was Mary Elizabeth Sheridan of Oneida.

To be included on the dean’s list, students must have completed 12 or more credits during a semester for letter grades with at least a 3.30 quality point average. Part-time students qualify with the accumulation of 12 credits with a 3.30 quality point average.

Zenon Named to the Dean’s List at The Citadel

Thomas Childeric Zenon of Waterville has been named to the dean’s list at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, for academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2013-14 academic year.

Dean’s list recognition is given to those students whose grade point average is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.

While at The Citadel, Thomas is working toward a bachelor of arts in criminal justice.

Zenon also was honored for outstanding academic achievement at The Citadel.

Residents Graduate from RIT

The following local residents graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in fall 2013. Please note some students may have received more than one degree.

Raymond Boronczyk of Bridgeport received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering; Michael Cresswell of Cazenovia received a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering; and Jeffrey Myers of Oneida received a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

Silfer Named to University of Iowa Dean’s List

Jessy Silfer, a native of Cazenovia has been named to the University of Iowa’s dean’s list for the 2013 fall semester.

Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Tippie College of Business who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on 12 semester hours or more of UI graded course work during a given semester or summer session and who have no semester hours of I (incomplete) or O (no grade reported) during the same semester are recognized by inclusion on the dean’s list for that semester.

Undergraduate students in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine may qualify for the dean’s list with fewer than 12 semester hours of graded credit if deemed appropriate by the college.

College of Nursing students participating in clinical courses must have a total of 12 semester hours of earned credit, with eight semester hours of graded credit with a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Colgate Honors Dean’s list Students

The following Colgate University students are recipients of the dean’s award for academic excellence during the fall 2013 term at Colgate University. To be eligible for the dean’s award, a Colgate student must achieve a minimum 3.30 average while enrolled in at least four courses.

Andrew Thompson, a graduate of Hamilton Central School from Hamilton, is a member of the Colgate Class of 2016; Daniel Luntzel, a graduate of International School Helsinki from Hamilton, is a member of the Colgate Class of 2017; Kellyann Hayes, a graduate of Eastport South Manor Jr-Sr HS from Hamilton, is a member of the Colgate Class of 2016; Mary Beehm, a graduate of Brookfield Central School from North Brookfield, is a member of the Colgate Class of 2015; and Minh Trang Nguyen, a graduate of British School of Warsaw from Hamilton, is a member of the Colgate Class of 2014.

Lusher Named to Westminster Choir College Dean’s List

Andrew Lusher of Oneida, a music education major, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

Ballard Earns BA from Hofstra University

Jenna Ballard of Kirkville graduated from Hofstra University in December with a BA in English. Jenna was among more than 500 students who earned undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees at Hofstra’s mid-year commencement.
