Local author shares story using vintage images
(Bridgeport, NY – April 2014) Discussing the importance of the history of Bridgeport is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series. The book titled Bridgeport from local author Judy Barrett boasts a vast collection of more than 200 vintage images. The book highlights the people and places that make this New York hamlet extraordinary.
“Bridgeport is still a hamlet, which is another factor in the continuance of the uniqueness of our community,” writes author Judy Barrett. In her new book, Barrett celebrates the history of this truly unique hamlet, which lies in both the towns of Cicero, in Onondaga County, and Sullivan, in Madison County. It is divided only by Chittenango Creek, which was the main attraction for settlement in the early years.
Barrett culled vintage photographs from local resident’s collections in order to complete this pictorial history. She displays images showing the many farms that once dotted the landscape, as well as, the small industries that sprang up in the hamlet and the development of Route 31. Readers and residents alike can take a closer look at the long-forgotten sawmill, tannery and blacksmith shop. The book also shares how the hamlet got its name after a bridge and a dam were built as a power supply.
By showcasing the scenes of yesteryear, Images of America: Bridgeport hopes to preserve the history for generations to come.
As Barrett states, “History has always been an intriguing subject for me and I hope that more people will develop that interest because of what they learn about the history of their community.”
