Levy drops nearly $100,000, lowers tax rate
(Canastota, NY – May 5, 2014) Canastota Mayor Carla DeShaw announced the village Board of Trustees has adopted the 2014-15 budget.
The budget calls for a tax rate of $9.39 per $1,000 of assessed value, a reduction of 43 cents. Homeowners with an assessed value of $100,000 will save $43.
This is the second year in a row the village has been able to reduce the rate.
The budget reduces the tax levy from a little more than $1.7 million to just over $1.6 million (nearly $100,000) for the upcoming year.
“The village’s efforts toward innovation and efforts to control costs are allowing us to provide more services to our residents and at the same time reduce our tax rate,” said DeShaw. “Additionally, we are fortunate that the local economy is starting to rebound, providing additional revenues such as sales tax. We have been able to work to control costs that have continued to increase each year. Workers compensation, health insurance and retirement have begun to stabilize through staff reduction and changing coverage.”
