(Morrisville, NY- May 2014) Morrisville State College has announced its plans to expand its varsity intercollegiate offerings with the addition of women’s ice hockey, slated to begin in the 2015-16 season.
The addition will increase the Mustang’s athletics program to 17 varsity teams.
“Morrisville State has been watching the growth of women’s ice hockey closely for several years, waiting to add it to our intercollegiate program when we felt it was the right time for the college,” Mustangs Athletic Director Greg Carroll said. “With the expansion of the sport at both the collegiate and junior levels over the past five years, we are very excited to begin competing at the NCAA Division III level in 2015-16.”
Morrisville State has run a men’s program since 1997.
Carroll said a national search for a head coach is underway.
“We have been fielding interest from potential candidates for several months as word of the addition spread across the ice hockey network,” Carroll said. “We have a terrific search committee in place and are very excited about the review of candidates with the goal being to have a new coach in place by July.”
The addition of women’s ice hockey marks the second sport to join the athletics program over the course of the past academic year, as Morrisville State added men’s golf last summer. It now brings the women’s athletic offerings to 10 varsity teams, including basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball, hunt seat and western equestrian.
