(Syracuse, NY – May 22, 2014) Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) announced that sixth-grader Emma Neufang, of Long Branch Elementary School, Liverpool, is the winner of the 2014 New York State Senate Earth Day Poster Contest for the 53rd Senate District.

“I am impressed by the entries from my district, especially Emma’s poster,” Sen. Valesky said. “They exhibit originality and imagination, along with an interest and concern for the environment. I hope that these students continue to learn about the Earth and about what they can do to protect it for future generations.”

To celebrate and honor Earth Day, the New York State Senate sponsored an Earth Day Poster Contest for students in grades K-6. This year’s theme was “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” The Senate’s focus is to emphasize the importance of recycling and waste reduction and to stimulate creative thinking about solutions to problems concerning these issues.

More than 130 students from eight schools in the 53rd district participated in the poster contest. Each student received a participation certificate acknowledging their work, with the winner’s art displayed in Sen. Valesky’s office. All of this year’s entries are posted on Sen. Valesky’s website at www.nysenate.gov/earth-day-2014-poster-contest-district-53.
