(Canastota, NY – June 2014) Gregory Keefe is to receive the 2014 Canastota Alumni Educator’s award for his excellence in teaching and for instilling in his students a love of music, while inspiring many of them to pursue a career in music education.

A 1964 graduate of Red Hook Central School, Gregory (Greg) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam in 1968. He continued his education at the Crane School of Music attaining a Master’s degree in 1971.

Greg began his teaching career at Fort Plain Central School in 1968 as Director of Vocal Music. He accepted a position as the Vocal Music and Drama instructor with the Canastota Central School District in 1970 where he remained until his 33-year retirement as a teacher in 2001. During these years, Greg enhanced the music program with numerous musical/drama performances as well as the organization and instruction of many of the student “pit bands” accompanying these shows. He also directed Canastota Summer Theater productions from 1975 to 1980 and acted as the director/organist for various area churches from 1970; continuing in this capacity through 2012, long after his retirement from teaching.

Throughout the above years Greg utilized his talent in other directions as well; acting as Section Leader for The Syracuse University Oratorio Society for twelve years and as Adjunct Drama Instructor at Cazenovia College for three years. He founded and directed the Masterwork Choir of Central New York from 1973 to 1988.

Since Greg’s retirement from the teaching profession, he has been employed by the Merchant Pipe Organ Builders of East Syracuse. He holds memberships in the New York State United Teachers Association, the American Guild of Organists (former Dean of Syracuse Chapter) and the Organ Historical Society.

Greg resides in Canastota with his wife Carolyn and they have one son, Sean Pearson. Camping, travel and an interest in sports and classic cars occupy their leisure time.

The Alumni Banquet will be held Saturday June 28 at the Rusty Rail.
