Bookstore campaign raises money for local literacy efforts

(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 2014) Colgate Bookstore will be celebrating Hug a Book Week from Sept. 6 to 14 to share a love of reading and to raise money and awareness for local literacy programs. Funds raised by this campaign – which will include a social media challenge and a children’s book party – will benefit the Literacy Coalition of Madison County NY (LCMC NY).

Inspired by the new picture book Hug Machine by Scott Campbell and the Bookstore’s passion for childhood literacy, Hug a Book Week will feature three opportunities to raise awareness and donations for local literacy initiatives:

The Colgate Bookstore will donate 10 percent of all children’s book sales from Sept. 6 to 14 to LCMC NY.

For every picture of a person hugging a book posted to the Bookstore’s Facebook page (facebook.com/colgatebookstore) or shared on Twitter (tag @colg8bookstore and include a #hugabook hashtag) between Children’s Program Coordinator Heather Elia pledges to donate $1 of her own money to LCMC NY (up to $100).

On Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon the Bookstore will host a Hug a Book children’s program and pizza party in the Class of 2003 Events Room (third floor) at 3 Utica St. A dramatic reading of the featured title and other book-themed stories will be followed by crafts, activities, and a pizza and salad lunch. Open to children of all ages and their families, although intended mainly for ages 3 to 7, this program is free of charge. However, optional suggested donations of $2/child will be accepted. One-hundred percent of the funds collected will be forwarded directly to the Literacy Coalition of Madison County. (Program supplies and lunch are available thanks to a local family).

For more information on Hug a Book Week, contact Heather Elia at the Colgate Bookstore by phone at 315.228.6944 or by email at helia@colgate.edu.
