Raiders Compete but Fall Late at Albany
By John Painter
(Albany, NY – Oct. 25, 2015) It was a CAA reprise for Colgate, and 25th-ranked Albany escaped with a 24-17 victory.
The second road opponent from the tough Colonial Athletic Association produced another hard-fought defeat for the Raiders (4-4). Just like at Delaware back in September, Colgate fell behind early, rallied, and then lost again on the game’s final drive.
Albany (6-2) used a 26-yard quarterback scramble from Will Fiacchi to the Colgate 2-yard line, and then Fiacchi bootlegged it in on the next play for the winning score with 16 seconds remaining. Fiacci scored two touchdowns and threw for another.
Colgate had rallied from a 10-point deficit to force a 10-10 halftime tie. After the Great Danes went ahead 17-10 in the third quarter, Colgate forced a fumble and drove 43 yards to tie the game at 17 with 10:57remaining.
The Raiders won the turnover battle 3-0 against the nation’s top turnover margin team coming into the game.
Colgate had one more possession with the game tied, but Albany’s defense forced a 3-and-out and the Great Danes drove 66 yards for the winning score.
The Raiders return to Patriot League play next Saturday at Fordham.

Quotable
Colgate Head Coach Don Vaughan
(On game)
“We talk about it all the time. There are no easy games in college hockey and tonight was no exception. We’re a veteran club and we stuck to the task. We knew how we wanted to play against Sacred Heart. We stuck with it and got the result that we wanted.”
(On third period)
“It was our best period of the night. We made some adjustments and the guys use to the atmosphere and the facility. Our power play came to life. We moved it around well all night, but we were able to get some shots through in the third. At the end of the night, the power play proved to be the difference.”
(On power play)
“I thought we found seams really well tonight. Spiro (Goulakos) was able to get open in the middle and when he gets shots from the middle, good things happen. I was really happy that John Lidgett was able to get his goal in the third. Spiro found him through the seam and Lidgett didn’t miss, tucking it under the cross bar. It was a great goal and a huge goal for us tonight.”

Morgan Earns Patriot Special Teams Award
By John Painter
(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 20, 2014) Chris Morgan is the latest Colgate Raider to be awarded Corvias Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week.
Morgan averaged 45.7 yards on three kickoff returns Saturday against Yale, including a 93-yarder for a touchdown. That highlight evened the score at 24-24 late in the third quarter and was Colgate’s first non-onside kickoff return TD in nearly 15 years.
It was the program’s first kickoff return touchdown of any kind in almost seven years.
“It was a squib ball up the middle that finally got to me,” Morgan said of his first career six-pointer. “I made a couple of spin moves, a couple of jukes, but I got out (of the pack), saw green and took off for the end zone.”
Ameer Riley had Colgate’s most recent non-onside kickoff return for a touchdown back on Oct. 23, 1999. Riley opened that evening at St. Mary’s (California) with a 95-yard runback to boost the Raiders to a 43-13 victory. The most recent official kickoff return for the Raiders took place Oct. 27, 2007, when Pat Simonds grabbed a Lafayette onside attempt and bolted 38 yards to pay dirt in a 36-27 win.
The Raiders as a kickoff return unit lead the Patriot League and rank 13th nationally at 24.1 yards per return. Morgan now owns a 36.8-yard average, but with only four returns is not yet eligible for conference and national rankings. Teammate John Maddaluna III leads the Patriot League with a 25.9-yard average on 16 returns, with a long of 56.
“John’s been doing a great job all year of breaking them to the 50,” Morgan said. “We finally got it loose. Coach (Ryan) Knowles knows what he’s doing and we finally got one.
“They’ll probably just squib it to us for the rest of the year.”
In addition to his special teams duties, Morgan added five tackles from his cornerback position.
Colgate student-athletes have won the Corvias Patriot League Special Teams award four of the last six weeks, with Jonah Bowman (Sept. 13 and 20) and Victor Steffen (Sept. 27) already earning certificates.
