Chun Named to NCAA Division I Council

Inaugural Group Formed in Response to Many Changes Taking Place in Top Collegiate Division

(Hamilton, NY – Dec. 2014) Colgate Director of Athletics Victoria M. Chun ’91, MA’94 has been named one of 40 members of the inaugural NCAA Division I Council.

Chun joins the group of fellow athletics directors – one from each Division I conference – plus two voting student-athletes, two faculty athletics representatives and four commissioners (one from the five highest-profile FBS conferences, one from the remaining FBS conferences, one from the FCS conferences and one from the remaining conferences).

“We are very proud that AD Vicky Chun has been appointed to the inaugural Division I Council,” Colgate University President Jeffrey Herbst said. “The NCAA Board of Directors has confirmed that Vicky is a national figure in intercollegiate sports and that she will have an important voice in upcoming debates.”

The Council is charged with conducting the day-to-day business of Division I and would be the final voice on shared-governance rule-making decisions. It is being formed in response to the many changes taking place in Division I governance, and among its initial tasks is ensuring that the principles of amateurism are protected.

The NCAA Board approved the initial Council roster, which as President Herbst noted includes many proven conference and national leaders. The Board expects the Council to offer guidance on behalf of the collegiate experience of student-athletes, which has been a hallmark of Chun’s two-year administrative tenure at Colgate.

Chun was named Colgate’s Director of Athletics and Associate Professor on Jan. 1, 2013, after serving in an interim capacity for five months.

Making a Difference

Chun excelled for the Raiders as both as a student-athlete and head coach before shifting her career path to administration. She remains the only person in NCAA Division I history to earn both player and coach of the year honors in the same conference, as well as the only person to win conference championships in those two roles.

Colgate under Chun maintained a 98 percent NCAA Graduation Success Rate this year, placing Raider student-athletes fourth nationally in Division I for the second campaign in a row. The Raiders were joined by peer schools Stanford, Harvard, Yale and Brown at the 98-percent mark, just ahead of Columbia, Duke and Princeton.

Colgate had a Patriot League-best 17 of its conference-sponsored teams record perfect 100-percent graduation success rates, ahead of both Bucknell and Holy Cross with 16.

Chun is the only female athletics director in the Patriot League. Among 345 Division I institutions, she is one of 29 women (16 with the sport of football), and one of eight minority women (four with sport of football) actively leading an NCAA Division I athletics department.

She serves on the NCAA Division I Championships Cabinet (liaison to FCS Football) and the NCAA FCS Football Regional Committee. In addition, Chun serves on the Executive Board of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), where she also chairs the Foundation Fund.  In 2013, she was selected to the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation Board.  Most recently, Harvard University invited Chun to serve on its Board of Overseers.
