(Canastota, NY – Jan. 2015) The Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest is currently underway at the Canastota Public Library. Entrants may enter their short stories and poetry in one of four age categories.
The contest, organized by Joan and Doug Eddy, is a memorial to their daughter, Rebecca Eddy, a local Canastota woman who died at a young age in an automobile accident. Ms. Eddy was a graduate of Canastota High School as well as a graduate of John Hopkins University. She was an athlete, an artist, a thespian and a scholar. Eddy felt a passion towards writing and also towards her community.
Entry Forms are currently available for the Writing Contest at the Library’s Circulation Desk. Entry requirements for the contest indicate that one entry of a Poem or short story (500 -5,000 words) may be submitted. There are four age categories for submission and entries of those age categories will be judged in the two categories of poetry and short stories. The age categories include age 10 and under; 11 – 14 years, 15 – 18 years and 18 years and older. Short stories and poems may be any style or subject and the contest is absolutely free to enter. There are no residential requirements or limits.
Entries may be mailed to the Library at Canastota Public Library, Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest, 102 W. Center St., Canastota 13032. Entries may also be dropped off at the Canastota Public Library. All entries must be submitted to the library by the close of business on March 31st at the close of business. Prizes will be awarded in each age and writing category. All first place winners will receive a cash award of $25. Second place winners will receive a $10 award. Winners will be announced on April 13 at 7 p.m. at a special awards ceremony at the Canastota Public Library. At that time, entrants will also have the opportunity to read their poem or short story to the audience.
