Paul, Toure named Mustang Athletes of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – March 2015) The Morrisville State College Athletics Department has named women’s basketball guard Jennel Paul (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and men’s basketball forward Ibrahima Toure (Brooklyn, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb. 15.

PAUL-MOR-2014-WBB Paul became the all-time leading scorer for the women’s basketball team on Wednesday, notching 10 points in the victory over SUNY Cobleskill, bringing her career total to 806 points. She added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals to her tallies on the historical night, as she took over the top spot held since the 2002 season.

Her totals on the week led Morrisville State to a 2-1 record, securing the second place finish in the North Division of the conference.

Paul followed her record breaking performance with nine points and eight rebounds in the win over Bryn Athyn, before wrapping up the week with a team best 13 points in the loss to Penn State Abington.

The senior is a graduate of Paul Robeson High and is majoring in human performance and health promotion at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Joseph Paul of Brooklyn.

TOURE-MOR-2014-MBB Toure led Morrisville State to a 2-1 week, averaging 21.3 points and 8.0 rebounds across three games played. In the loss to Cobleskill on Wednesday he tallied 19 points and added six rebounds, before contributing 13 points in 25 minutes played against Bryn Athyn on Saturday.

Toure wrapped up the week with a collegiate best performance against Abington, leading all scorers with 32 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 100% from the floor on 12-of-12 shots. On the week he hit 78.6% from the floor (22-of-28 shots), 50% from long range, and 75% from the free throw line on 18-of-24 shots. He also averaged 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 2.0 blocks per game for the Mustangs.

The junior is a graduate of Brooklyn High for Law and Tech, and is a transfer from SUNY Delhi where he was named the Sportsmanship Award winner of the year. An individual studies major at Morrisville State, Toure is the son of Mohamed Toure of Brooklyn.

Toure named to NEAC All-Conference Second Team

3 (Morrisville, NY) The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2014-15 men’s basketball All-Conference selections, naming the top 15 players from across the league to its first, second and third teams. Among those selected is Morrisville State College junior forward Ibrahima Toure (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn HS for Law and Technology).

Toure led Morrisville State in scoring this season, averaging 17.6 points per game, while contributing an average 7.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.7 steals per game at forward. The junior scored double figures in all but two games, appearing in all 25 and starting 24, as he registered five double-double performances on the year.

Toure posted a single game high 32 points on a perfect shooting performance from the floor (12-of-12 shots) to go along with 12 rebounds, and posted 20+ points in eight times. His efforts against Vaughn College and SUNY Geneseo (22 points each game) landed him NEAC Player of the Week accolades December 1.

He ranks in the top seven in nine different NEAC statistical categories, including:  field goals made (1st – 172), field goal percentage (6th – 51.8), free throws made (6th – 87), offensive rebounds (7th – 53), defensive rebounds (5th – 126), rebounds (5th – 179), blocked shots (6th – 28), points (4th – 439), and points per game (5th – 17.6). He also holds ranking within all of Division III in points per game (105th), field goal percentage (88th) and total field goals made (43).

The junior is a transfer from SUNY Delhi, and is majoring in individual studies at Morrisville State. He is the son of Mohamed Toure of Brooklyn.

Gratien selected to NEAC All-Conference First Team

(Morrisville, NY) The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2014-15 women’s basketball All-Conference selections, naming the top 15 players from across the league to its first, second and third teams. Among those selected is Morrisville State College senior guard Alyssa Gratien (Syracuse, N.Y. / Jamesville-DeWitt).

GRATIEN-MOR-2014-WBB Gratien played a key role to assisting the Mustangs to a program best 18-7 overall record and 14-4 conference stint. Across the season she averaged a team high 18.4 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game from her guard position.

Gratien posted double figures in all but one game on the season, with more than 20 points 11 times out of 25 games. She tallied a single game high 30 points, four assists and five steals in the victory over SUNY Poly, where she drained season high five three’s from beyond the arc. Gratien was named the ECAC Division III Upstate Player of the Week on December 11, leading Morrisville State to two NEAC wins behind her 24.5 point and 5.0 assist average on the week.

The senior ranks in the top six in six different NEAC statistical categories, including three-pointers made (2nd – 75), free throws made (2nd – 121), free throw percent (1st – 87.7), steals (6th – 57), points (4th – 460), and points per game (4th – 18.4). She also ranks in four national categories: points per game (46th), free throw percentage (12th), three-point field goal percentage (93rd), and three-pointers made per game (11th).

l8 Morrisville State appeared in the NEAC Championship Tournament for the first time in program history Tuesday night, defeating Cazenovia in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinals Saturday against Lancaster Bible College.

The graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High and Onondaga Community College is majoring in nursing at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Jamie Leiss and Paul Gratien.

Ward named NEAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year

(Morrisville, NY) The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its men’s basketball major award selections, naming Morrisville State College freshman guard, Trent Ward (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) the 2014-15 Rookie of the Year.WARD-MOR-2014-MBB

Ward averaged a conference rookie best 15.0 points per game  and also contributed on average 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game while posing as an outside threat in scoring. The freshman posted double figures in 21 games on the year, with a single game high 27 coming against Keuka College.

He also posted single game highs of seven steals against Clarkson, and nine assists against Bryn Athyn. Seven times on the season he registered 20+ points.

BB7Ward started all 25 games for Morrisville State at guard, and ranks in the top 12 in eight different statistical categories overall in the NEAC, including: field goals made (12th – 126), 3-point field goals (8th – 56), 3-point field goal percentage (5th – 42.1), free throw percentage (6th – 81.7), assists (11th – 71), steals (10th – 42), points (10th – 375) and points per game (10th – 15.0).  He is also ranked within all of Division III in free throw percentage (90th), steals per game (209), and 3-point field goals made (153rd).

The freshman is a graduate of Auburn High and is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. He is the son of Lisa Ward of Auburn.

Kurth competes on the SUNY Oneonta men’s swimming, diving team

Ethan Kurth, a Undeclared major from Earlville was a member of the 2014-15 SUNY Oneonta men’s swimming & diving team. The Red Dragons finished with a dual meet record of 3-5 this season. The team finished in 3rd place at the SUNYAC championships.

Ethan competed as a diver for Oneonta this season. Ethan record season best scores of 160.10 in the 1 meter/6 dives and 223.42 in the 3 meter/6 dives.

Finn Nominee for Mike Richter Award

(Hamilton, NY) Colgate sophomore goaltender Charlie Finn has been selected as a nominee for the 2015 Mike Richter Award.

Finn is one of 28 nominees for the award that honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men’s hockey, award officials announced on Friday.

A native of North Vancouver, B.C., Finn has compiled a 17-9-3 record in 29 starts between the pipes for the Raiders this season. The second-year netminder leads the Division I ranks with six shutouts as he has held opponents to one goal or less on 11 occasions during the 2014-15 season. Finn also ranks among the nation’s best in both goals against average (2.02/14th) and save percentage (.924/22nd).

Co-presented by Let’s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation, candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 59 NCAA Division I men’s hockey head coaches.

Candidates for the award must display outstanding skills on the ice and be in good academic standing. Nominees must also complete in 50 percent or more of a team’s games played during the regular season. Consideration will be given to the candidate’s activities in the community.

A committee of coaches, scouts and members of the national media will select the finalists and winner. The five finalists for the 2015 Mike Richter Award will be announced on Wednesday, March 18.

The second annual award will be presented by Mike Richter at the 2015 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in Boston in April.

Reynolds competes on the SUNY Oneonta women’s swimming, diving team

Kristina Reynolds, a gerontology major from Sherburne, was a member of the 2014-15 SUNY Oneonta women’s swimming & diving team. The Red Dragons finished with a dual meet record of 6-2 this season. The team finished in 2nd place at the SUNYAC championships, which was the best finish in program history.

Kristina competed in the freestyle and backstroke events this season.

Sweeten, Biggs named Mustang Athletes of the Week

Jordan Sweeten(Morrisville, NY) The Morrisville State College athletics department has named western equestrian rider, Jordan Sweeten (Cuba, N.Y., and men’s lacrosse attack Brad Biggs (Tully, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 1.

Sweeten earns athlete of the week accolades following her performance in the regular season finale and regional championships on Sunday.

In the last regular season scheduled show, Sweeten earned the blue ribbon in the novice western horsemanship class, topping the field of seven other competitors. Her efforts assisted Morrisville State to a high point team tie with Cobleskill.

She followed her winning performance with a second place finish in the intermediate western horsemanship regional finals, a field that featured seven total riders. With Sweeten’s finish, she advances to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Semifinals held at Ohio State on March 21 and 22.

The sophomore is a graduate of Cuba Central and is majoring in equine science and management at Morrisville State.

BiggsB15Biggs posted four points in his first collegiate game for the Mustangs on Saturday, notching two goals and assisting two others in a 17-6 win over SUNY Canton.

Biggs first goal came in the opening quarter as time was winding down, netting the man-up tally to increase the Mustangs lead to four. He added another score with just over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, his second man-up goal of the contest.

To go along with his four points, Biggs also collected four ground balls and caused two turnovers on the day.

The freshman is a graduate of Tully High and is majoring in business administration at Morrisville State. He is the son of Brenda and Bradley Biggs of Tully.

Geswaldo, Fiore named NEAC Athletes of the Week

(Morrisville, NY)  The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week selections in men’s lacrosse Monday, naming Morrisville State College junior attack Louie Gewaldo (LaFayette, N.Y.) the Offensive Player of the Week, and junior goalie Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) the Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending March 1.

GeswaldoL15 Geswaldo posted six points in the season opener for the Mustangs on Saturday against Canton, notching five goals and an assist while adding two ground balls in the 17-6 non-conference win over SUNY Canton. Three of his tallies came in the first quarter as Morrisville State controlled the game early on.

The junior is a graduate of Lafayette High and is majoring in wood products technology at Morrisville State. He is the son of Vicky and Louie Geswaldo of Lafayette.

Fiore posted eight saves between the pipes on Saturday, allowing just two goals in three quarters of play to post a 2.67 goals against average and a save percentage of 80%. Six of his total stops came in the third quarter, which allowed Morrisville State to put the game out of reach for Canton.FioreC15

The junior is a graduate of New Dorp High and is majoring in sports, nutrition and fitness management at Morrisville State. He is the son of Cathy and Kevin Fiore of Staten Island.

Waldau, Marriott named NEAC Players of the Week

(Morrisville, NY) The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its weekly award winners Monday, naming Morrisville State College sophomore Hunter Waldau (Central Square, N.Y.) and freshman Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) its women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week for the week ending March 8.

WALDAU-MOR-WLX-2015Waldau, the offensive player of the week, netted four goals on five shots during the Mustangs season opener Saturday against Clarkson. Two of her tallies came on three free position opportunities, while also registering two draw controls.

The sophomore is a graduate of Paul V. Moore High and is majoring in human performance and health promotion at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Heather and Fred Waldau of Central Square.

Marriott has earned defensive player of the week accolades following her efforts in her collegiate debut for the Mustangs on Saturday. During the contest, she caused a team high three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. The freshman is a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High and is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Debbie and Darrell Marriott of Peekskill.
