(Cazenovia, NY – April 2015) The following programs will be held at the Cazenovia Public Library in April.
LEGO My Library: Monday, April 20 at 3:30 pm
For ages 4 and older and their families.
Using the Library’s collection of LEGO and Duplo blocks, children ages 4 and older and their families will have the opportunity to build and create something spectacular.
Building offers children the experience of making their imaginative musings come to life. By introducing them to these hands-on experiences with science and math, children not only learn how to build different structures but how to also make them stronger and taller.
Poetry and Art Workshop for Adults—Poems by the Lake: Cazenovia and the Romantics
Friday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m.
Conducted by Syracuse University Intern Carolyn Fragnoli, this workshop will focus on writing poems in the context of the romantic tradition. Nature was important to the romantics, so how can Cazenovia Lake and other natural surroundings inspire the poems written today?
To find the answer, attendees will review some basic poetic concepts that were important to the romantic poets and explore how to write poems as modern day romantics. And then, using poems by romantic poets and local poets in the Cazenovia area as models, all will see how such elements as nature, tranquility, and beauty inspire their own poetry writing.
Poetry and Art Workshop for Ages 8-12—Alphabets, Animals, and Leaves: Making Poems for the Poetry Tree
Friday, April 24 at 3:00 pm
Fragnoli and Cazenovia Public Library Children’s Coordinator Jenna Wright team up to conduct a poetry and art workshop for children ages 8-12. They will focus on sounds, images, and colors as well as on how to combine poetry with art. Children will then write and decorate poems that explore alphabets, animals, and nature and have them displayed in the library.
Film—Bending Sticks: The Sculpture of Patrick Dougherty
Friday, April 24 7:00 pm
Bending Sticks offers an intimate portrait of the artist Patrick Dougherty, whose career spans four continents and three decades. As an internationally acclaimed environmental artist, Dougherty has created over two hundred majestic sculptures out of nothing more than saplings.
The film follows Dougherty and his collaborators during a year of “stickwork” revealing his creative process, his inspirations, his thoughts about the temporary nature of his work, and his unusual personal story. It also explores how the artist’s childhood – spent rambling through the woods and building forts and hideouts with his four siblings – fueled his career and nurtured the prolific, insightful artist he is today. Following the film, Emily Zoengle from Stone Quarry Art Park will relate Dougherty’s involvement with the Art Park and his contribution to a project there in 2003. Also, visitors are invited to enjoy the book display associated with Patrick Dougherty and willow art, located by the circulation desk.
In conjunction with Bending Sticks, the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation is sponsoring “Willow Festival at the Willow Patch” on Saturday, April 25th from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Come to the Willow Patch off Mill Street in Cazenovia and play games, work and play on the willow basket sculpture, learn about the coal chute, and try your hand at planting new willows in the woven willow fence sculpture.
Library events are held in the Community Room, and, as always, there’s free popcorn at the movies.
These events are free and open to the public. For more information on any event at the Cazenovia Public Library, call 655-9322 or visit www.cazenoviapubliclibrary.org.
