Six Raiders Earn Patriot Lacrosse Honors

COLGATE C-GATE (Hamilton, NY – April 2015) Colgate’s run to a Patriot League regular season championship resulted in postseason honors for a half-dozen Raiders.

Matt Clarkson repeated as an All-Patriot League First Team member in the midfield, and he was joined by attackman Ryan Walsh. Second-team placards went to defender Matt Yeager, midfielder Cameron Williams and goalkeeper Brandon Burke.

Anthony Abbadessa became a major award recipient when he was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year – the third Colgate Raider to claim the rookie award in the last four seasons.

Three of those four to win the first-year award are among this season’s six Colgate honorees. In addition to Abbadessa, Burke was last year’s rookie winner and Walsh claimed the trophy in 2012. Abbadessa becomes the sixth Raider to take home Patriot League rookie honors.

Colgate’s senior team captains were solid choices for a place on the first team.

Clarkson leads the Raiders in scoring with 35 points, on 12 goals and a team-high 23 assists. He has seven multi-assist games, including three games of three assists or more. Clarkson also has two multi-goal games, including a hat trick against Boston University.

He is the first Colgate midfielder to repeat as first team all-conference since Matt Lalli in 2007-08.

Fourth Time’s a Charm

Walsh made the Patriot League’s first team after three turns as a second-team recipient.

Colgate’s goal-scoring leader has 22 for the year, which is the lowest season total of his career. But 19 of those goals came against Colgate’s Patriot League schedule, helping the Raiders to their first regular season title since 2012.

Yeager was Colgate’s lone choice for preseason All-Patriot League honors, and he carried that over to his first postseason award. The senior anchored a Raiders defense that is allowing 9.1 goals per game and tossed a first-half shutout Friday at Army in an 8-5 win. Yeager has 18 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers for personal season-highs in both categories.

Williams scored a goal in the opener at Bryant and hasn’t quit – he’s the only Raider with at least one goal scored in every game this season. The junior is second on the team with 21 goals, including 15 in Patriot League play (also second). Williams scored his second hat trick of the season Friday at Army on just four shot attempts.

Burke missed one complete game this season and most of another with an injury, but he has bounced back to stand second in the Patriot League in goals-against average at 8.35. The sophomore was the backbone of a Colgate defense that held Army scoreless in the first half Friday en route to the victory that clinched a share of the conference title.

Burke is 7-3 in goal this season and 16-10 for his young career. He was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week three times, national player of the week by the USILA and Baltimore Sun on Feb. 7, and ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate Player of the Week on March 28.

Abbadessa also was a three-time weekly award-winner from the Patriot League and one-time recipient by the ECAC. The first-year attackman is third on the team in both goals with 20 and points with 31. Abbadessa scored goals in his first 11 collegiate games, including four in a crucial one-goal win at Holy Cross.

He’s also tied with Williams for the team lead in man-up goals with six.

First Offensive Weekly Award for Walsh; Burke Claims Third Goalkeeper Nod

Walsh and Burke picked up Corvias Patriot League Player of the Week Honors.

Walsh was named Offensive Player of the Week after he matched season highs with four goals and six points in Colgate’s 8-5 win at Army. The attackman scored two goals in each half, and three of his goals were unassisted. Walsh scored his four goals on just five shot attempts.

This is Walsh’s first career offensive weekly award and the first for the Raiders since Peter Baum in 2013. Walsh three times earned rookie of the week in his debut season of 2012.

Burke picked up his third Goalkeeper of the Week selection this season after a nine-save outing Friday at Army. The sophomore improved to 7-3 in goal, making five of his saves during a first-half performance that saw the Raiders head to the locker room leading 4-0.

He lowered his goals-against average to 8.35 and raised his save percentage to .525.
