Jay Pullman, “Self Portrait.” An exhibit of Pullman’s art will be at the New Woodstock Free Library through Sept. 25.
(New Woodstock, NY – Aug. 2015)There will be an exhibit of paintings by self-taught artist Jay Pullman at the New Woodstock Free Library showing through Sept. 25. A reception for the artist will be held Friday, Aug. 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibit will be open for viewing during all regular library hours.
An English teacher by profession, Pullman began painting “To release the stress of teaching.” Soon, he was selling his work through a gallery owner in Ithaca who praised his work and enthusiastically encouraged him, Pullman recalls. At first Pullman aspired to beanother Andrew Wyeth, but his work evolved over time through realism to works “with a psychological edge to them,” which he refers to as “contemporary realism.”
Pullman now paints less as a reaction to stress, more as a pursuit of something he loves to do, he says.
“Whatever his motivation,” said Library Exhibits Chairperson Nancy Edwards, “Jay is an accomplished artist whose work will be enjoyed by everyone.”
