(Chittenango, NY – Nov. 2015) Nov. 19 was the Great American Smoke Out, a perfect opportunity to encourage people to quit smoking and to spread the word on the reasons not to start.
Chittenango Middle School students participated in this event by setting up a table during lunch periods with information about how to quit and also pamphlets about Reality Check, a youth group working to reduce youth exposure to tobacco marketing.
“We know that tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and we want to make sure that we are letting people know that. It is sad to think that people are dying when if they just never started, that could be avoided,” said seventh grade Health student, Tori Allen.
Sheila Leamer, Health Teacher at Chittenango Middle School said, “I am glad that my students wanted to participate in the Great American Smoke Out. I appreciate their passion for the health of their peers.”
