MockingbirdFilmStillSepia ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ up for discussion

(Oneida, NY – Jan. 2016) As an adjunct to this year’s selection of Harper Lee’s masterpiece “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the 2016 CNY Reads One Book, Oneida Public Library will screen the 1962 film version directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m.

The now-classic film is notable for its faithful portrayals of the novel’s major characters, thanks no doubt to the screenplay adaptation written by the eminent novelist Horton Foote, who won an Academy Award for his work. Gregory Peck, who won the best actor Academy Award that year, has become so identified with his role as Atticus Finch, the wise father and upright attorney, that in many minds he and the fictional character are one and the same.

The child actors, Mary Badham as Scout and Phillip Alford as her brother Jem, convincingly portray Atticus’ children as described by Harper Lee and effectively reflect in their innocence the bitter racism of small-town Alabama during the depression.

The black-and-white film consistently ranks high on any list of “best American movies” and in 1995 was listed in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as culturally and socially significant.

Discussion and refreshments will follow the screening of “To Kill A Mockingbird.”
