Canastota Public Library news

By Beth Totten, public relations

(Canastota, NY – Jan. 2016) We love quilts in the winter months, don’t we?  The beauty and warmth of a handmade quilt reminds us of everything good in the world.  During the months of February and March you can warm up at the Canastota Public Library while taking in the beautiful artful exhibit displayed by the Thread Bears Quilters Guild.  The Guild meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill. These lovely ladies have created the heart-warming quilts that you will find on the walls of the library.  According to their Facebook page, new members are always welcome.

The month of February also brings back our regular children’s programming including Baby & Me Lapsit with Mrs. Angela on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Storytime with Mrs. Liz on Thursdays at 10 a.m.  Both programs are opened to anyone interested in attending.  Baby & Me Lapsit is geared to children from birth to twenty-four months of age while Storytime is for the toddlers and preschoolers in your life.  No reservations are necessary.  You can attend every week or as often as you would like to attend.

Our volunteer tax consultant, Harry Hood, will be at the library again this year to help those who are 60 and older with tax services.  The hours for tax help will be Friday mornings beginning Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. until noon.  Help is offered on a first come, first serve basis. Select appointments will be available for Friday afternoon time slots.

For those who prefer to prepare their own taxes, we do have a very limited quantity of New York State Tax forms and expect to receive some federal tax forms as well.  As in previous years, the state and federal government are encouraging people to file online.  You can always use our available bank of computers to prepare your taxes online or if you’d prefer, tax forms can be viewed and printed here at the library. Printing costs are ten cents per page.

The library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 15 for President’s Day.  We will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 16 for regular hours.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17 we’ll be offering a movie day for teens and tweens in grades 6 and up.  We’ll be showing the film, “The Scorch Trials” at 2 p.m., which is the second movie in the Maze Series.  Then, stay for some activities and crafts until 4:30 p.m.

Our Book Club is always looking for new members.  We meet monthly, generally on the last Tuesday of the month at 1pm to discuss the selected book.  On Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. we’ll be talking about “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson. The book is about The Lusitania. It was called the “magnificent ship” standing seven stories from dock to bridge and consuming 140 tons of coal each day while just standing still. While some of Britain’s private steamships had been converted for the war, the Lusitania had no connection with the war. Yet, being an ocean liner for passengers wasn’t the reason it became an important part of world history.

If you are interested in seeing us offer a particular program, please stop by the Circulation Desk and let us know.  We serve the community and want to be sure we are meeting the needs of our community.  Whether you visit the library for tax assistance, for a program or to pick up a book to read, we love seeing you.
