John Salka

salka, john (5)I, John Salka, the Republican candidate for the 121st Assembly district, and am calling out Assemblyman William “Bill” Magee on his recent votes regarding ethics reform, free college education for illegal immigrants, agricultural supports and SAFE Act funding.

Mr. Magee has supported a proposal to cut 55 percent in agricultural supports in this year’s one-house budget. The proposed cut of this valuable assistance for our farmers from $31 million to $14 million illustrates that our current assemblyman is more concerned with pleasing his downstate friends and getting re-elected than taking care of local family farms Upstate.

He has voted to provide for free college tuition for illegal immigrants, funding for the SAFE Act, and his votes against ethics reform eight times makes one wonder just where his priorities lie. Many are starting to wonder just who he is really working for. As the chairman of the Agricultural Committee, his silence about the proposed cuts to agriculture aid to farmers has left many of his constituents to reconsider his loyalties and call for his resignation as chair of the committee.

I want to double the amount of the current level of assistance for our family farms. With a budget slush fund this year of more than $2 billion, we surely can squeeze out extra funds to support our farms that are already suffering due to the low price of milk. We need to protect our economy and local food supply, not by accepting Albany smoke-and-mirrors proposals that favor downstate, but serious and realistic programs that will help our farmers and our small businesses.”

I am calling for the complete repeal of the SAFE Act and oppose free college tuition for illegal immigrants. We have millions of our young people struggling to pay back thousands of dollars in college loans. What are they to think when someone who is not even an American citizen gets free tuition? To me, this is a slap in the face.

Our current assemblyman is out of touch with issues like the heroin epidemic plaguing our region. Emergency medical services are reaching a critical point of not being able to provide sufficient coverage for their communities, and Mr. Magee, who is on the ad hoc EMS committee for the Assembly, has done little to find solutions. We desperately need a change from the Albany status quo.

  1. Perhaps we should ask Mr. Salka what he has achieved in his current position as Brookfield Town Supervisor…. he wants a lot…but what has he actually DONE?…take a ride around the Town and see the deterioration and trash …

  2. Those issues are still part of on-going budget talks, and Salka is making some pretty big & fancy promises that he would never be able to keep.

  3. Lets see. A new fleet of vehicles with no increase in taxes, fiscal stability and never needing to exceed the property tax cap; a reduction in the tax rate by 15% since I have been in office, a capitol reserve plan that protects the town’s assets to name a few. A comprehensive plan that protects the town, regular office hours and a website for transparency. If you take the time to check my record on the county I am proud of what I have done and stood for.Junk? Maybe you could check with other towns to see that they too are powerless to clean up private property.
Big and fancy promises. I think not. Just proposals to try to make things better. Only promise I make and can keep is that I will work as hard as I can for my constituents. Thank you for your comments.

  4. Well put, Mr. Salka. Less than five points separated you and Mr. Magee last election. This time we will send you to Albany to work for us and not the downstate elite politicians! We are with you again, Mr. Salka!

  5. Mr. Salka..believe the truck program was the highway superintendent’s idea, took three years to put together a comprehensive plan, the website is rarely used, as for transparency — when was the last time we saw town board minutes…..and “Powerless” to clean up the community where people are allowed to throw garbage out onto their lawn …and you imposed “rules of decorum” to limit public speaking at Town Board meetings.

  6. You have this 20 year Veteran’s vote!! Keep up the great work John!! We need someone to represent us little folk in Albany! I am proud to be able to support you in any way I can!!

  7. Nice talk except that most of it isn’t true. If one bothers to look at his opponents legislative record, he supports farms, particularly young farmers and innovative farmers, he supports rehab for heroin addicts, and supports young people shooting programs. I found nothing about free college for immigrants, etc. Quit running by attacking (with complete fabrications) the guy who is doing good and come up with some good ideas of your own.

  8. Mr. Salka likes to play dirty in the game of politics. Slinging mud, but always crying out that he, himself is a victim. . what makes you think hed be any better in Albany? He’s only in this for his self pride. The only things he’s done for the town of Brookfield is keep secrets, leave board members out of decision making, and piss a lot of people off.
