Proceeds for the Walk for Wanda Fundraiser will benefit Herkimer County HealthNet type 2 diabetes prevention activities for Herkimer County residents. The Walk will start at 10:00 am(registration begins at 9:00 am) and will proceed around the Little Falls High School Track, 1 High School Road, Little Falls.
Althea Noyes, Walk for Wanda Chairperson said, “After losing my mother, Wanda, to complications from diabetes in February 2014, I had a strong desire to raise money for diabetes awareness. Wanda worked with various local realtors for over twenty years as a real estate agent in the Herkimer County area. She loved spending time with her family, especially my two brothers and father, Peter. I am excited to partner this year with Herkimer County HealthNet, because we want the funds to stay local, and they host many programs for Herkimer County residents and organizations in support of diabetes prevention.”
Herkimer County HealthNet is a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of individuals who live, work, play, and learn in Herkimer County. Among many of its preventive health activities and projects, HealthNet has awarded municipalities and organizations mini-grants for playgrounds, trails, and other public spaces in an effort to encourage community members to participate in physical activity in their neighborhoods. In addition, HealthNet is currently offering FREE classes to people who have pre-diabetes (elevated blood sugar levels) or who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.
Herkimer County HealthNet’s Executive Director, Thomas C. Curnow, Ed.D. said, “We encourage individuals, teams, organizations, and local businesses to participate in some way. Please consider forming a team and walk together, donate a gift basket that represents your business, or donate to diabetes prevention activities in Herkimer County in honor or in memory of a loved one. Most of us know somebody in our family or social circles who are at risk or are currently battling type 2 diabetes. Most importantly, the money raised from this event stays local.”
Curnow also stated that the Rotary Club of Little Falls and Little Falls Hospital are also supporting this event through donations to Herkimer County HealthNet’s diabetes prevention programs.
