spring-peepers-1Friends of Rogers is marking the 46th anniversary of Earth Day with two unique outdoor programs. For many, the bell-like chorus of peepers signals the arrival of the long-awaited spring season. During “Crepuscular Hike: Call of the Peeper,” visitors will embark on a twilight journey to search for this very vocal and elusive creature. Despite their loud calls, spring peepers are only about the size of a thumbnail and are seldom seen.

“When you start to hear whistles from peepers during the night, that’s a clear sign winter is just about over,” said naturalist intern Matt Nusstein. “Peepers only grow to about an inch to an inch-and-a-half long, and their brown skin provides them great camouflage. They are very hard to spot, as they are nocturnal, hiding from predators during the day, coming out at night only to feed – and sing, of course. As we listen for their whistles, we’re sure to have plenty of luck finding some.”

“Crepuscular Hike: Call of the Peeper,” begins at 7 p.m. April 22, and flashlights are recommended. Space is limited, so pre-registration is suggested at $2 dollars for members and $3 for not-yet-members.

The following day, visitors have the unique opportunity to traverse the thrilling trails of Cush Hill during our Trail Trek Series. Hikers will learn more about tree species and the unique features they display.

“Hiking is a necessity for the soul,” said Executive Director Simon Solomon. “Our Trail Trek Series is introducing others to what we enjoy every day ─ a sense of peace and solitude amongst the trails and parcels of property less explored by the casual visitor.”

Trail Treks begin at 10 a.m. and last approximately two hours. Guests should meet in the main parking lot at Rogers Center, where carpooling will be taking place if necessary to the various trailheads. While the program is free of charge, a $3 donation is suggested to help fund future programs.

Rogers Center is operated by Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers educational programs for all ages. Seasonal winter hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Sunday. For more information, call (607) 674-4733 or visit www.friendsofrogers.org.
