At approximately 4:25 pm, State Police in Sylvan Beach were dispatched by Oneida County 911 to a possible missing person who had entered the waters of the Erie Canal just below the State Route 13 bridge in an attempt to recover his tackle box which fell into the canal. The missing male was identified as Aaron Teater, age 23, of Verona.
Scuba divers from the New York State Police, Sylvan Beach Fire Department, North Bay Fire Department, and Cleveland Fire Department searched the canal for approximately two hours. The victim was located in the same area where he was last observed. A cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
