CNY Fair Housing, a 25-year old local non-profit organization working to eliminate housing discrimination in Central and Northern New York, is conducting two workshop sessions on Fair Housing laws and responsibilities Tuesday, May 17, at the Resource Center for Independent Living, 1607 Genesee St., Utica.
The first workshop will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the second workshop will take place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. People need to attend only one of the two workshops. The training is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
The trainings will review current fair housing laws, reasonable accommodations, illegal behavior and national developments in Fair Housing like Disparate Impact. Both sessions are open to area housing providers, social workers, case managers, landlords and tenants and anyone doing business in the housing market.
Municipalities and public housing authorities are obligated to actively work to affirmatively further fair housing or potentially lose federal funding. Private and non-profit housing providers, landlords and others in the housing market can also protect themselves from increasingly larger settlements and court actions by knowing and understanding their fair housing responsibilities.
