Oneida Public Library will be closed Saturday, July 2, through Monday, July 4, in celebration of American independence. The library will be open as usual on Tuesday, July 5, at 9:00 a.m.

Watercolors with a Splash of Mixed Media
Wednesday, 10 a.m.-12:00 noon
In a four-session weekly workshop under the instruction of artist Carol Cotten, up to 20 participants will learn how to enhance watercolors with soft pastels and pen and ink. The workshop is free but requires preregistration at the OPL (363-3050). Participants must provide their own art supplies. The workshop will meet at the same time on July 13, 20 and 27.

Summer Reading Program: Mission to Mars, Part 1
Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Youth Librarian Michele Ryan leads a free four-part summer reading program on the exploration of the planet Mars for children aged 6 to 14 years, from “cadet training” for a manned flight to experiments in space-rocket propulsion. Part 1 involves “training” games and activities for a potential NASA mission to Mars.
July 11
OPL Children’s Summer Theater
Monday at 9:00 a.m.
In the OPL Summer Reading Program’s theater component, budding young actors aged 8 to 14 years will learn improvisational and acting skills in a workshop in which they’ll become “Characters in Search of a Play.” Tom Lemery is the workshop director as well as the director of the play within the play. The workshop meets from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, July 11-15 and July 18-22. It is limited to 16 children aged 8 to 14 years. A public workshop performance will take placeJuly 22. Preregistration is required at the OPL (363-3050).

Adults looking for a relaxing, satisfying pastime can sample coloring books for adults, along with coffee and cookies. All supplies will be provided.

Preschoolers, kindergarteners and their fathers, mothers and guardians are invited to a diverting hour of storybooks, fun and games designed to celebrate summer and reading.

Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
Youth Librarian Michele Ryan leads a free four-part summer reading program on the exploration of the planet Mars for children aged 6 to 14 years. Part 3 brings children to the “experimental phase,” in which they will test their theories about life on Mars with hands-on experiments.

Sprockets to Spokes: An Adventure in Bike Repair
Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
Children 8 years old and up can learn the basics of bicycle repair in a free one-session workshop led by Ben Wormuth. The hands-on workshop is limited to 20 children.
July 25
The Scavenger Hunt To Beat All
Starts Monday at 9:00 a.m.
On July 25, armed with cameras, official OPL Scavenger Hunt notebooks and 21 off-the-wall questions, children and adult family members team up and hunt down their quarries around town to provide the 21 best answers. Ten days later, on August 4 at 10:00 a.m., family teams submit their notebooks for evaluation by 21 judges at the OPL. Highest point scorers win the prizes.

AARP’S Driver Safety Program
Monday and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
An AARP trained instructor offers a six-hour drivers’ safety class for potential discounts in car insurance. To register, call Bob Fish at 315-363-0455.

Book Talk with Ellen Wayland-Smith
Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Oneida Community Mansion House
Oneida Library and the Oneida Community Mansion House co-host a book talk by Ellen Wayland-Smith, who will discuss her recently published book “Oneida: From Free Love Utopia to the Well-set table.” The critically praised book is an insider’s history of the Oneida Community’s evolution into Oneida Ltd.
