The week of June 27 t, the Canastota Public Library will begin accepting self-sign- ups for summer reading programs including grades k – 6 and the tween/teen programs on Monday, June 27 th . Signups will be available for the entire week. This year’s theme for grades k – 6 is “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read”. “Get in the Game, Read” is the teen theme. The sign-ups will take place on the second floor of the library!
Puppeteer Nancy Sander will kick off our summer with her play, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Nancy Sander’s Puppet Shows are full of fun for the entire family. She has kicked off the Canastota Public Library’s summers for many years. Sander was the principal puppeteer consultant, puppet builder, puppet creator and puppet script writer for the Emmy Award-winning children’s televisions show, “Hickory Hideout,” produced by WKYC-TV and WNBC-TV. She received an Emmy Award for her contribution to children’s television. The show also won the Parent’s Choice Award, the National Education Association Award and received a silver medal in the International Film and TV Awards of New York.
Baby & Me Lapsit’s summer sessions will begin on Wednesday, June 29, at 10am. The program will run each Wednesday through August 3. In this program, babies from birth to 24 months will listen to stories, sing songs, learn finger plays and more. This is a great way to introduce your baby to the library.
On Thursday, June 30, Storytime with Mrs. Liz returns to the library. Pre- schoolers listen to stories, sing songs and make a craft during this weekly program. Storytime will run each Thursday from June 30 through August 4 at 10am.
Every Saturday morning at 10:30am, the library hosts a Lego Block Party in our children’s room. Children of all ages are welcome to join us to create interesting projects with the many Lego blocks that we have on hand. Legos and imagination go hand in hand and we try to display as many of the wonderful creations as we can in our second floor display case.
Programs are also planned for the tween and teen age groups. Tweens and teens should visit the library to sign up for specific programs. Programs include a summer book club, a game day, craft days, movies, robotics and a game making program.
Pageturners Book Club will meet weekly beginning Monday, July 11 and ending August 15. The meetings will be from 11:45am – 12:45pm and students should feel free to bring a lunch. The library will supply drinks and snacks. Books include “Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer,” by John Grisham as well as “Confessions of a Murder Suspect,” by James Patterson and several others. Books will be available to borrow from the library about a week prior to the discussion. A complete list of books can be previewed at the library or on the library’s website.
On Mondays, tweens and teens can attend Monday Madness from 2:30 – 4pm. Each Monday, we’ll either have a game day, a craft time or a movie at the library. Movies planned include Superman vs. Batman and My Neighbor Totoro, a Japanese animated fantasy about two sisters who befriend wood spirits.
Ready Set, Robotics, is back again this year. Students between the ages of ten and 15 can learn more about how robotics is used in the workplace. For six Wednesday evenings beginning July 7, students can design, build and program LEGO NXT Mindstorms Robots. The program will run from 5:30 – 7:30pm. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about Arduino Circuit.
Those in sixth grade to 12th grade can also come to the library to learn how to create a video game. Richard Marcous, Associate Professor of Computer & Information Technologies from Morrisville State College will kick off this weeklong workshop. This program will meet the week of Monday, July 25 each day from 9am – 10:30am to craft games. This workshop has limited spaces so students should sign up early.
Special events that we have scheduled for the K – sixth grade and their families include the following:
Bingo Party, Wednesday, June 29 at 2pm in the Children’s area for children in K through 6 th grades. Prizes, games and a lot of fun will be had by all.
Craft Day, Tuesday, July 7 at 2pm in the Children’s area. Join us for a fun make and take home craft.
Musician David Black will perform at the library on Thursday, July 7 at 7pm. The magic show will take place in the Children’s area.
Watch the movie, “Zootopia” with us at the library on Wednesday, July 13 at Craft Day, Monday, July 18 th at 2pm in the Children’s area for children in K through sixth grades
Watch the movie, “Kung Fu Panda 3, The Weight is Over” on Wednesday, July 27 at 2pm.
Live animals will visit the library on Thursday, July 28 at 7pm when Perfect Ponies brings their special zoo of small animals.
Jester Jim will visit us on Thursday, August 4 at 7pm for an evening of juggling, beatboxing and more. Comedy juggling and magic is the name of the game for this NY Juggler. Jester Jim has entertained thousands of people with his hilarious self-titled show.
