The “Open Evening Book Club” will hold its next meeting in the Story Garden Room on Wednesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. Discussion will focus on the on the 2015 crime fiction novel Dark Corners by prolific British writer Ruth Rendell. In her compelling psychological thriller, Rendell delivers a story of blackmail, murder and one man’s downward spiral.
When his father dies, young writer Carl Martin inherits a house in London and a bizarre collection of homeopathic “cures.” In the wake of the release of his successful first book, Carl finds himself struggling to produce a sequel.
In need of funds, he rents the home’s upstairs rooms to Dermot McKinnon, an intense and church-y veterinary assistant. The novel takes a dark turn when Carl makes the fateful decision to sell controversial slimming pills to a young woman, who is then found dead. Dermot begins to blackmail Carl, refusing to pay rent, making threats, and invading his space. Carl is soon driven to the edge of madness as tensions grow and his life begins to unravel . . .
