mansion-houseWHAT: Oneida Community Historical Archaeology Tour

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016 – 10 a.m.

WHERE: Oneida Community Mansion House, 170 Kenwood Ave., Oneida

WHO: Kevin Coffee, Executive Director, Oneida Community Mansion House

Join us Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m., for International Archaeology Day as we search for evidence of past lives in the landscape surrounding the Mansion House.

The Oneida Community (1848-1880) built a communal home consisting of dozens of buildings and hundreds of acres of land, which they used to support their specific ways of life, work, and thought. Oct. 15 is International Archaeology Day and this outdoor tour will seek out evidence of those past uses, locate built evidence, and re-imagine how life was lived by the Oneida Community, its regional antecedents and descendants.

This walking tour, led by OCMH director and archaeologist Kevin Coffee, will explore the site of the first, wood frame, Mansion House; the sites of early water-powered factories of the Oneida Community; the route of the Oswego & Medford Railroad and site of its Oneida Community station stop; and other landscape elements. Participants should wear comfortable hiking or walking shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. Binoculars and cameras are encouraged.

The event is free for members, non-members are $7 and students (ages 8 & up): $3.

The Oneida Community Mansion House was the residence of the 19th-Century utopian Oneida Community (1848 – 1880). OCMH preserves, collects and interprets material culture, intangible heritage, and five historic buildings, situated on 33 acres of landscaped lawns and gardens. OCMH is a National Historic Landmark and chartered by the New York State Department of Education.

The House is open for visitors Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. Guided tours are provided (with admission) Wednesday through Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Oneida Community Mansion House is located at 170 Kenwood Ave., Oneida. For more information, call 315-363-0745 or visit www.oneidacommunity.org.
