Come join us as we experience a true Victorian Christmas! This time travel journey uncovers the beginning of holiday traditions of revelers of the nineteenth century.
Ever wonder why evergreens and their pine scent fill a home during the holidays? Why that shiny pickle dangles from the Christmas tree in the hallway? Where or where did that bah humbug of a character of Scrooge, come from?
Victorians come to life as Mary Jeanne Bialas, educator and presenter for the New York Council for the Humanities, brings the history of Christmas traditions to life, offering a peek into the characters of Charles Dickens and the Victorian holiday spirit!
The program will be held Nov. 13 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Church on 121 St. Joseph’s Place in Oneida. A $5 donation is appreciated.

The Madison County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that operates both a museum and the Mary King Research Library located at 435 Main Street in Oneida. The society continues to preserve, collect, promote, and exhibit the history of Madison County and its fifteen towns and one city through the development of programs that enhance Madison County’s heritage. The historical society’s headquarters are housed in an 1849 Gothic Revival Villa that is listed on the State and National Registry of Historic Places.
