Kids from ages 5 to 12 can soon shop at the Canastota Public Library’s Kids’ Holiday Store. But today, they can pick up their Reading Report Forms and prepare for their shopping spree.
Several years ago, the staff at the library wanted to help kids make their holidays a bit brighter. They decided that one way to do that was to open a store where kids could shop for their friends and family. The type of tender used? Points earned by reading.
Kids, ages 5 – 12, can stop by the library and sign up for this program at the Circulation Desk. There, they will be given a packet of reading report forms. They can then read age/level appropriate books to earn points to purchase gifts. Once a child has completed their brief report forms, they should hand them in at the Circulation Desk to have their points tabulated. Each report will earn points that can be used to shop.
Younger children may receive help from an adult when writing out their reports. Beginning December 1, children can hand in their completed report forms and sign up for their time slot to visit our store. On the specified day, children can shop for their presents and even wrap them, if desired. Gifts for the shop are varied and are on display on the second floor of the library in the Carnegie Room. Gifts were selected for various age groups.
The hope of the CPL staff is that this will help children read, in addition to their classroom reading assignments. Reading not only helps our children become better students, it helps them become better persons.
