Attention all Madison County residents: Wednesday, April 5, we will be celebrating National Walking Day. This initiative is sponsored by the American Heart Association to remind people about the health benefits of taking a walk including…
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Preventing or managing various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes
- Strengthening your bones and muscles
- Improving your mood
- Improving your balance and coordination
Other goals of this day are to celebrate physical activity and encourage Americans to be more active on a regular basis. We would like to remind residents of Madison County about an opportunity to celebrate National Walking Day right in our own communities.
After much hard work this past year, the Madison County Rural Health Council in partnership with Healthy Monday Syracuse installed five new walking trails across the county as part of the Monday Mile initiative. These marked one-mile routes are located in the towns of Canastota, Oneida, Morrisville, Stockbridge and Brookfield.
The locations of all the Monday Mile’s include:
- Canastota: Begin at the corner of N. Main Street and Canal Street near Head http://healthymonday.syr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Canastota- Monday-Mile-Map-Website.pdf
- Morrisville: Begin at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 100 Eaton Street http://healthymonday.syr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Morrisville- Monday-Mile-Map-Website.pdf
- Stockbridge: Begin at Stockbridge Valley Central School Bus Parking Lot http://healthymonday.syr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Stockbridge- Monday-Mile-Map-Website.pdf
- Oneida: Begin at the Rail Trail, behind Oneida High School http://healthymonday.syr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Oneida- Monday-Mile-Map-Website.pdf
- Brookfield: Begin at Brookfield Town Park (signs not installed yet) http://healthymonday.syr.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Brookfield- Monday-Mile-Map-Website.pdf
The Monday Mile supports National Walking Day by encouraging physical activity by identifying safe and accessible spaces for recreation. It supports organizations that utilize the Monday Mile to facilitate physical activity in the places where people live, work and play and it provides sustainable access to walking routes in the community that can be used by anyone, at any time, free of charge.
We are excited to announce that this is the first time the Monday Mile has been introduced in a rural county, making it easier to get moving in our area.
