The Commander of the Cazenovia American Legion Post 88, Richard Benner and the President of Post 88’s American Legion Auxiliary, Margaret Costello, invite the community to attend a Veterans Day gathering at Memorial Park on Albany Street, Cazenovia.
This event will take place Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at 11 a.m. The Legion’s focus this year will be on the recognition of the centennial year of the United States’ involvement in World War I, which began April 6, 1917, and ended Nov. 11, 1918.
Bill Tiliston, owner of Dave’s Diner at Common Grounds across from Memorial Park on Albany Street, is offering a free cup of coffee to all veterans. After the ceremony, all veterans and their families are invited to the Cazenovia American Legion’s Post Home on Chenango Street for lunch provided by Post 88’s American Legion Auxiliary, chaired by Mary Ann Lansing.
Memorial Day is set aside in May as a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of our country. Veterans Day in November gives us an opportunity to thank the living veterans for their military service and to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated.
The words, “thank you for your service” means to a veteran that his or her service to their country has not been forgotten.
What veterans fear the most is that their contribution to our defense will fade away, that no one cares. This is especially true with active duty veterans who may now be burdened with psychological and physical wounds. We owe our deepest recognition of them, their families and caregivers for their sacrifices.
Fly your flag on Veteran’s Day.
