Nine straight points and a 6-minute defensive stand nearly tipped the scales in Colgate’s favor during a 59-51 loss to Lehigh here Wednesday night.

The Raiders trailed 49-36 entering the fourth quarter and were down 55-42 after Quinci Mann’s layup for the Mountain Hawks with 6:28 remaining. But Colgate refused to quit.

Chelsey Koren and Summer King connected on layups and Haley Greer knocked down a big 3-pointer with 2:52 showing that made it 55-49. Nia Ahart’s layup with 1:23 remaining capped the 9-0 run and pulled the Raiders within 55-51.

Colgate’s defense forced a 3-point miss by Mann, but Cameryn Benz grabbed the offensive board with 1:02 to play. After a Lehigh timeout, Camryn Buhr connected on a jumper in the paint with 29 seconds remaining for Lehigh’s first points in just shy of six minutes.

Koren’s ensuing 3-point attempt rattled out and Benz iced the game for the visitors with two free throws.

From the Source
• Head coach Bill Cleary (On the fourth-quarter comeback) “We picked up our intensity and we picked up our energy. There was more of a sense of urgency, which was great. But we need that the whole game. We’re putting ourselves in big holes game after game, and we’re fighting and clawing our way out of them. But we have to have that same passion, that same energy, that same purpose, throughout the 40-minute game.”

(On Summer King) “It was a great game for her. One of the things I was most impressed with was she really pushed through in the last three minutes. You could tell she was willing herself to execute and push forward at that critical junction because she knew how important it was for her to be on the floor. And that’s big for us. She made herself better today and it was good to see Summer back with a double-double.”
