OPL Friends’ Jewelry Sale

Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Friends of the Oneida Public Library will have on sale the best of old and almost new jewelry and assorted accessories. All proceeds benefit the OPL.

Tax Help for Seniors

Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

IRS certified volunteers under the auspices of Cornell Co-operative Extension will provide free tax help and electronic filing to seniors on a first-come, first-served basis. Seniors should bring all their pertinent tax documents and last year’s return with them. Tax Help at the OPL continues Monday and Wednesday mornings through April 16.

Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.

Newborns to 4 year-olds and their parents or guardians will enjoy songs, rhymes, coordinated movements and just plain fun, all of which will help stimulate the children’s language skills.

Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

IRS certified volunteers under the auspices of Cornell Co-operative Extension will provide free tax help and electronic filing to seniors on a first-come, first-served basis. Seniors should bring all their pertinent tax documents and last year’s return with them. Tax Help at the OPL continues Monday and Wednesday mornings through April 16.

Wednesday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Volunteer technical advisors will be on hand to help device and laptop users set up, adapt and get the most out of their devices. No appointment is needed.

Teen Night: DIY T-Shirt Bags

Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Teens can bring to the library their well-worn but favorite t-shirts and “upcycle” them into spiffy tote bags.

Family Super Saturday: Golf Lesson with a Pro

Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Parents and children will enjoy an hour of stories, games and free golf lessons from PGA Professional Justin Nishimoto, who currently lends his talents to Turning Stone Casino golf courses.

For Teens: Foundations in Personal Finance, Session 2

Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Ninth through twelfth graders can still sign up for finance expert Dave Ramsey’s mini-course on budgeting, savings, careers and taxes through videos and free personal student workbooks. The following four sessions will be held on the second Saturday of the month at 12:00 noon, March through June. Register for the course at the library desk or by calling (315) 363-3050.

Pushing the Limits Book Club

Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

Prof. Jen Herzog, a biology instructor at Herkimer County Community College, will conduct a discussion for adults on Hope Jahren’s memoir “Lab Girl” and the latest developments in botany. She will also address “Citizen Science Projects” that are sprouting up around the world.

Oneida Public Library will be closed Monday, February 19, for Presidents’ Day (observed). The library will be open as usual on Tuesday, February 20, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The OPL challenges young escape artists aged 11 to 14 years old to work as teams to solve puzzles that will lead to clues that can lead to escape from the Library Dungeon.

Winter Break: Dinosaur Dig

Thursday at 11:30 p.m.

For kindergarten through fifth-grade students, paleontologists Mike and Roberta Straka will open up a treasure trove of knowledge about fossils and dinosaurs plus a hands-on “dig” that students can explore in search of real dinosaur bones. Parents or guardians need to register their children beforehand.

Winter Break Movie Matinee: ‘Coco’

Friday at 11:30 a.m.

All ages will enjoy Disney’s 2017 animated film, Coco, which tells the magical tale of a Mexican boy caught up in the exotic and colorful world of the dead in a quest to learn music and his family’s secret.

OPL Board of Trustees Meeting

Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

The Board of Trustees of Oneida Public Library will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. in the library’s Local History Room, 220 Broad St., Oneida. The public is invited to attend. The History Room permits barrier-free access to the physically handicapped.

OPL Board Candidates and Budget Hearing

Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Oneida Public Library Board of Trustees invites the public to the library’s Meeting Room to meet the candidates for election to the Board’s three open seats as well as to discuss the library’s proposed operating budget for fiscal year 2018-2019. The election and budget vote is scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, at the OPL from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m.
