Stirpe: Substance abuse counselors are critical to combating the opioid epidemic

Addiction is a serious disease that has taken a devastating toll on our families and communities. Across the state, more than 1.9 million New Yorkers are struggling with substance abuse.[1] In 2016 alone, the number of opioid-related deaths in Central New York increased by a startling 53 percent, taking 242 lives.[2]

One of the best ways we can combat addiction is by supporting those who are on the front lines: credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselors (CASACs). These dedicated professionals provide critical care to help those dealing with addiction get on the path to recovery. Unfortunately, the field is experiencing a shortage of qualified staff due to low wages and the rising cost of tuition. I’m fighting to address this shortage by attracting more people to the field and ensuring counselors can continue to do this invaluable work. I authored legislation that would provide student loan forgiveness to CASACs who are employed at a New York-licensed facility and have resided in the state for at least one year (A.8890).

As a member of the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, I’ve fought to address the growing heroin and opioid crisis that has claimed far too many lives. From authoring measures like this one, to expanding coverage for patients at inpatient rehabilitation facilities and increasing state funding for treatment and prevention programs, I’m committed to helping end the cycle of addiction.

Substance abuse is a serious problem in Central New York and throughout our state, but by working together we can overcome this epidemic. If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, help is available at 1-877-8-HOPENY. And remember, my office is here to help you in any way we can.
