Man charged with stealing from state Department of Tax and Finance
LENOX – On Feb. 9, 2018, Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigators arrested David T. Van Marter, 39, of 502 North Highland Ave., East Syracuse, and charged him with third-degree burglary (class D felony) and fourth-degree grand larceny (class E felony).
Van Marter previously owned a business called Syracuse Chimney and Stove, which was located at 3279 State Route 31, Lenox. On Feb. 5, 2018, agents from DTF seized Van Marter’s business and all of the items within the building due to Van Marter allegedly owing state taxes.
It is alleged that after the building and its contents were seized, Van Marter unlawfully entered the building and stole property with an approximate value of $1,100.
Van Marter was arraigned in Lenox Town Court and was then remanded to the Madison County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond; he is scheduled to reappear Feb. 15, 2018, to answer the charges.
Cazenovia woman charged with welfare fraud
CAZENOVIA – On Feb. 7, 2018, Madison County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Tonnie S. Newcomb, 38, of 4765 Ormond Drive, Cazenovia, and charged her with third-degree welfare fraud (class D felony), third-degree grand larceny (class D felony) and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing (class E felony).
It is alleged that Newcomb filed public assistance documentation with the Madison County Department of Social Services which indicated that her children were living with her at her residence when in fact they were living at another residence. Due to this fraudulent act, Newcomb was provided $4,698 in public assistance benefits to which she was not entitled.
Newcomb was arraigned in Oneida City Court and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear in Lenox Town Court Feb. 27, 2018, to answer the charges.
