Madison County offers SkyWarn Spotter training
The Madison County Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service will host a basic SkyWarn Spotter course April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cazenovia Public Library, 100 Albany St., Cazenovia.
The objective is to train storm spotters about severe weather and what to report to the NWS and Emergency Management relating to severe thunderstorms, tornados, hail and lightning.
Topics include information on SkyWarn and its goal, the NWS mission and the importance of spotters and ground truth reports, as well as examples of how spotters can help forecasters warn the public; thunderstorms hazards, thunderstorm ingredients, downbursts, super cells, tornados, hail, squall lines, bow echoes, derechos and lightning, severe weather safety and terminology, how to get severe weather information and procedures for reporting severe weather to the NWS.
Individuals interested in becoming SkyWarn Spotters to feed valuable information to the National Weather Service are welcome to register.
The class is free and open to everyone, and no age requirements or previous training is required.
