Canastota Public Library: Still Knitting and Donating

The Canastota Public Library Knitters recently completed their latest project, “Shawls on the Wall.” When most people think of shawls, they remember the shawls worn by their grandmother or older people. That’s not the case today. Shawls have evolved into one of the hottest fashion trends. They can be styled in a number of attractive ways such as draped around the shoulders, pinned with a broach, tied or even modified into a poncho. Shawls are used for fancy occasions such as weddings, proms or dinner parties or can be paired with a shirt and jeans to complement the outfit. Shawls are a very versatile part of a wardrobe.

The knitters created this shawl display as a fundraiser. This shawl fundraiser is an excellent opportunity to purchase a one of a kind shawl for your wardrobe or as a gift while helping young families and the worthy cause of early childhood literacy. The “Shawl on the Wall” fundraiser to benefit the library’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

All shawls will be on display at the library for the month. Starting bids for the shawls will be either $20 or $30, depending on the size.

All proceeds from the sale will help the library to ship Dolly Parton books to the children from Canastota who are enrolled in the Imagination Library program. While the Dolly Parton foundation is responsible for donating the books to this program, the Library is responsible for shipping costs monthly to each child enrolled. Currently, there are over 300 children participating form the Canastota area. The cost to ship books to one child is approximately $30 each calendar year.

The Canastota Library Knitters meet on two days at the Canastota Public Library. One group meets every Thursday evening at 6pm until 8pm. A second group meets every Friday morning at 10am until noon. Everyone is welcomed to attend. If you are interested in learning to knit or an accomplished knitter, feel free to stop in for one of the meetings.
