Brindisi asks Amtrak to restore discount program for veterans

Amtrak discount provided 15 percent fare reductions for veterans and their family members; Brindisi: A discount is the least we can do for those who served our country

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi says he has asked Amtrak to reinstate its affiliation with the Veterans Advantage program, which provided 15 percent fare discounts for veterans and their family members. Amtrak ended the program March 26, along with some other long-time discount programs, including one for AAA members.

“While I am pleased Amtrak is committed to improved ridership and rail safety, the Veterans Advantage program offered a small thank you for those who have served our country,” Brindisi said. “I believe offering this discount not only is a way we can honor their sacrifices, but it also helps Amtrak gain some loyal customers. I am asking them to reconsider this decision.”

The following is the text of Brindisi’s letter to Amtrak President Richard Anderson:

Dear Mr. Anderson:

I am writing to express my concern over the elimination of the Veterans Advantage discount program, effective March 26, 2018.

While I commend you for your continuing goal of improving ridership numbers and boosting the reliability and safety of Amtrak trains, I believe the elimination of your affiliation with Veterans Advantage and the possible elimination of all veterans’ discounts should be reconsidered.

I do not think it too much to ask to continue a long-time discount for veterans and their families. This is a small way Amtrak can honor the sacrifices they have made for our country. At the same time, I believe offering this small discount builds loyalty to your company from this group.

The Mohawk Valley region I represent includes a significant number of veterans, and I am sure that many have taken advantage of this discount since it was offered in 2001. I would respectfully ask you to consider again working with Veterans Advantage to offer this discount program to those who have served our nation.

Thank you very much for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi
